Herbert was leaning heavily on the wall, looking towards the room from which the bass and synth still pounded. He accepted what his father offered him soundlessly, then threw back half of the glass with a sour expression.

He just barely sat- perched would have been a better word, if that did not convey a sense of lightness and swiftness- on the edge of the window and watched Herbert sulk.

Johannes slowly glanced Herbert over as though he were looking at a photograph of someone who had died a long time ago.
"Never mind. You've quite flattened your hair."

Maybe not exactly, but he did remember some things - he knew he'd gone out a lot, gone riding, stayed in the village, done loads of things that his father would hardly allow now, not without an hour's lecture on how delicate Herbert was. And he was certain that if those things were true then his father had to have treated him differently then than he did now-
