"It - hardly matters-" he stumbled over his words, avoiding his eyes like a sullen teenage boy, though Herbert was not inclined to do that when he was a teenage boy, and never prone to sullenness. Or so he supposed? He realized he couldn't remember at the moment, and wondered when the last time he had remembered was, and looked down into his father's face with a sudden expression of such great distress his lip nearly trembled.

Herbert felt suddenly too drained to resist him, and followed his father into the hallway, feeling limp and powerless. This wasn't fair, he had wanted to have this party, and he'd wanted to actually be out there with people, partying, too-

He dropped his voice to a loud, hissing whisper. "There, see? See? Are you happy now?"

Herbert made a long exasperated angry noise, but didn't say anything else, finally cowed. He didn't want to confirm to his father that he couldn't handle the party, and be sent to his room.

Krolock returned with a glass of plum wine and one of Herbert's hand-held specialty mirrors. He gave them to Herbert, rather solemnly.
