Believe it or not, Adrien had actually tried to get a job. It just so happened it was a lot harder to work retail when you had been smeared in the tabloids for several months than Adrien had presupposed. Time and time again she had considered phoning up Adrian and cussing him out for this. But she knew Adrian too goddamn well for that kind of thing. Adrian would sigh heavily, like Atlas carrying the weight of the world, and say, 'I know.' And offer maybe to get her false papers and IDs and things. And offer to create a new identity, that of a woman's, because he was trying to be so understanding. Because he was out of the loop on Adrien's recent discomfort and confusion there. Because they had broken up and never spoke anymore.
Adrien no longer remembered how Adrian and she had come to break up. She knew it was ostensibly because of what happened in Karnak - what happened in New York - but because it had taken so long, she couldn't pinpoint the exact turn of events that had led to the break-up. And she still hadn't told Steve about the time she and Adrian had almost gone home together, any more than she had told him about Karnak. But sometimes the rebuilding efforts or some other thing came up in conversation and Adrian grew chilled. She hoped she had gotten better at lying or hiding her expressions at some point along the way, because Steve was, in many ways, about as smart as Adrian, and the stakes were much too high for her to go about telling people things, on purpose or otherwise.
Steve was busy with the Taskforce a lot of the time, which had Dan Dreiberg on it, she'd discovered, which had kept her from tagging along. She wasn't ready to see Dan. Related to the Adrian topic, she wasn't sure she was ever going to be ready. Dan had as much right to Adrian as she had to Steve: Adrian and Adrien were thoroughly broken up, after all. Thoroughly. But it still hurt, as they said, as she'd even caught Steve saying, like a son-of-a-bitch. She didn't want to humiliate herself or him by exploding with that in front of anyone else, even in front of other people who didn't speak French.
Since bringing up the gender topic to Steve, Adrien hadn't talked about it, but it was very much on her mind. She wanted to show Steve, well, what they might be doing a lot of in bed if the change back occurred, but lacked the courage to bring it up, given that it wasn't really ~fun casual sex~ if she was going at it from the calculating perspective of trying to figure out if Steve would still wanna fuck anymore.
Loki had exploded in popularity recently, which had thrust the topic back to the center of Adrien's mind. You couldn't turn on a tv or radio without hearing about him, or maybe seeing him - he did a lot of interviews now. He seemed to be doing well for himself: the grainy image of him on a talk show with his legs spread wide apart, doing a casual - thrilling! - demonstration of magic had taken Adrien off guard while channel-surfing away from Adrian's stupid cartoon recently. But now, of course, it turned out Loki was back working with Adrian again.
Adrien didn't feel comfortable calling and chewing out her ex-husband, but she sure as hell remembered how to contact Loki by sitting and meditating on it, and Loki made an attractive figure to project anger upon, so when Steve was out with his Task-force one day Adrien sat on the couch and did just that.
