"If we don't need that kind of protection, my boy, then that puts us at an advantage!"
He patted Herbert on the shoulder encouragingly.

"Vati," he whispered - really whispered, this time, in dim horror - "you're not going to bite that girl -?"
He did think Teja would be wonderful for his father, but... in truth his father was rarely wonderful for anybody, and this was a lot sooner than he would have hoped -

"She's not coming," Johannes interrupted. "This is more like... we'll call it networking. Is that the word?"

Herbert looked briefly concerned and dubious about what that might mean, but he either thought better of asking about it or decided not to think about it at all, because he nodded. He picked up the rest of the brandy and downed it, then headed jubilantly upstairs with a comment about attending a concert with Alex later that night (and how it would be the perfect place to start telling his friends).
Before leaving he told his father he was excited about going to another one of his parties again.
...especially, he added to himself, if they were no longer little more than a pretext for his father to pick a new girl to get rid of the next evening.
