"At any point!"

Johannes went to pour a glass of sligovica.
"She came here on her own," he said, "and she came back when I took temporary leave of my senses, as it were."

"Oooooh. Progress! You had to have some eventually."

Johannes scowled and held out the glass.

Herbert took it rather too energetically to be considered truly languid, but he tried.
"Thank you," he said, all prim, then lustily drank it down before collapsing on the couch his father had just occupied, which squeaked loudly in protest at having a 6'6'' vampire dropped upon it. "Soooo, tell me all about it! I'm so happy you're meeting new people here in the city. Now you know why I like it so much."

"I told you, it was only Teja. Herbert, please, you must learn to listen a bit better.:

"Vati, really. It's more than that. She likes you, I can tell."
He looked absurdly pleased with himself, then leaned forward to conspiratorially announce in a jarringly noisy stage whisper, "She says you're distinguished!"

Johannes paused and then allowed himself a particularly spooky laugh.
"You might say that."

"Vati, she didn't," said Herbert gleefully. "Oh, I knew it!"
It was at least half the smug glee of getting to be right, but he really was happy for his father. To be truthful, a lot of girls hadn't liked his father all too sincerely. He never blamed them, of course; no discourtousy meant to his father, but he had relied on the promise of pretty things more than goes of eternal love for about as long as Herbert could remember, and Herbert was doubtful about the kind of relationship that would lead to, especially since his father hadn't seemed to mean it anyway. But people were so much more understanding now and it only seemed likely that he could find a girl in this city who would want to be with the Graf from the start, not because she had no other place to go.

"She came back of her own will," Johannes said, raising his eyebrows in a pleased way. "You know, between her and Sarah, I seem to have a bit of a winning streak running."

That his father needed to specify this might have been a warning sign did not occur to the junior Krolock, who folded one of his long legs over the other with his hands pressed to his knee looking like someone's fashion template illustration of a dandy with the clothing dramatically swapped out: he wore acid-wash jeans rolled up at the ankle and baggy through the hips but more fitted in the thigh, penny loafers, a band t-shirt, and horn-rimmed glasses.
In any case, he was glad his father wasn't feeling the pang of Sarah's running out on him; Herbert had been a bit anxious when his father had at first not reacted to that, but now he thought it was probably all for the best. And he was glad the girl had decided to come back to his father. She'd be good for him. She seemed like she probably liked reading or the other sorts of thing which his father did with his endless time. She was a vegetarian, though, which Herbert remembered from dining with her at the Burger King, which could be an impediment. But certainly no more of an impediment than vampirism was for non-vegetarians.
"I told you," said Herbert with a faint crust of smugness. "She's going to adore you, you're so much more..." He made a wishy-washy hand gesture. "Mature than that Loki is, I'm sure she said something like that when I spoke to her."
It was mostly true. If you liked mature men, you couldn't get a lot older than vati. And she had said something about Loki that he thought amounted to that.
"Oh, vati, you should tell her about our library," he exclaimed suddenly.

"Yes! You could take her back home and show her everything and - well, without Loki breathing down her neck..." Herbert grinned at his father sharply. "Maybe you can breathe down it some."

Krolock frowned.
"I thought you liked the city."
