"Such an astute observer," he conceded, leaning back in his seat. "And yet, for all your clear thinking and grasp of the situation, you still wandered straight into my home, with no one else to be aware of your presence here..."
He smiled sharply.

She drew a quick breath, pulling away from him in sudden, obvious fright.

He laughed abruptly.
"Come now, my dear. I am not so ungracious as that."

She could hear her own hammering heartbeat. She assumed that he did, too.

Johannes poured himself a brandy and lifted an eyebrow at her.

She took a shaky breath. "Well, I'd better go before you kill me, then-"

"I'm not going to kill you," he said gently.

"You could, though." She looked desperately unhappy.

"So could a mortal man- and they certainly do."

"Suppose a mortal man had a pistol concealed here, in this table," he said, leaning forward to place his hand on it. "You would have no warning, no suspicion- one moment, alive, the next, bang, all over for you. And, er, you all over."

She looked more distressed than disturbed, watching him as though with a sadness too deep for words. All that lovely anger was gone, and in its wake was the predictable weak desire to make up, to placate. To be placated, perhaps, as he had suggested she was too impatient for. Johannes didn't know the first thing about her, did he? But this - neither did Loki. For all his own problems with his father, he had no idea what she went through every day in every exhausting interaction.
"I should go home," she repeated meekly.

"I don't know where I stand with anybody," she said numbly.
Just like that, she felt tears. She stood abruptly and turned away, though it was too late to hide from him. When the crying syarted, she instead sank back into the couch, with her face pressed against the cushion to conceal herself as much as she could.

He sat down beside her, watching with intellectual curiosity. He reached to move a wettened strand of hair from her cheek.
