"Johannes! I was just mobbed something like six hours ago, I want to know what exactly was your aim here!"

He gestured for her to sit.
"Would you care for some plum brandy? I ordered a few new bottles this past week. Herbert loves it so, bless him."

He smiled and brought her a glass.

She didn't drink it, though. She looked expectant, but also as though she were waiting for embarrassment to settle on her face. Internally she refused to apologize to him, because she knew she would capitulate entirely if she did.

Johannes sat opposite her.
"I apologize for being... er, less than forthright with you, my dear, but I did not know how you might react. You have had such a trying day already."

She tensed up. "Now you're telling me you'd have otherwise told me that?"

"That is another thing about your century," he sighed. "Such little patience for placation."

"How is the brand- ah. I see you haven't touched it," he said. "I apologize, my dear, for my indirectness."

"No, I don't think that they have. I think you are a keen manipulator, and are playing mild so that I will feel embarrassed and respond in kind. I think you had no intention to tell me anything, and I think when you say you would have if not for me being so delicate or something what you mean is for me to hear that you only had my interests at heart, and to feel bad for thinking any ill of you, so I'll be quicker to drop it. And then when you suggest my refusal to be placated is some kind of cultural loss of manners, that's to guilt me into shutting up. Pretending you're merely socially awkward instead of a 400 year old predator is a bit of an exaggeration, Johannes, you must see that," she said, with a mock widening of the eyes, now, finally, consenting to take a delicate sip of brandy.
