Loki was awakened the following morning by a knock at the door.
He groaned, and pushed his face into his pillow, but the visitor responded by ringing the doorbell a moment later.
He sat up, frowning. He could have sworn this was what the doorman was supposed to prevent, but this was probably something he had to put on a human facade for, so he threw on a robe and went to go answer.
It was 7:15, according to the clock on the VCR. Whoever it was had a lot of nerve.
"All right, I'm coming... "
He opened the door.
"Ah," he said. "That explains it."
It was Ted the morning doorman himself, looking about as disgruntled as Loki himself.
"I don't have to explain anything," Ted said. "I came here to ask you to explain why there's a crowd the size of Live Aid in the lobby asking to talk to you."
"I'll have to look up what a Live Aid is later," Loki began. "I don't know why-"
He froze, and his eyes widened.
"Yeah," said Ted. "That's why."
"I could have sworn I dreamt that," Loki said faintly.
"Well, you didn’t, and now I've got to deal with your fan club down there."
"You don't seem particularly surprised," said Loki, frowning slightly.
"You think I've never worked anywhere with your type?" Ted retorted. "I know I'm getting old, but that doesn't mean I'm not with the times."
"My type...?"
"You know," said Ted. He leaned in and lowered his voice. "Mutants ."
Loki's frown deepened. Ted held up his hands defensively.
"Is that not the right word anymore? Sheez, I'm sorry-"
"Never mind," Loki sighed. "Tell them to go outside, I suppose."
"That's it?"
"What else would you have me do?"
"Hell if I know!"
Loki covered his eyes and sighed again.
"I'll figure something out, just- give me a moment."
Ted looked at him warily, and then nodded.
"I guess so. See you around, Luke."
As Ted went back to the elevator, Loki turned and shut the door.
He leaned against it and sighed.
Then he smiled.
Then he sighed again and went back to where Teja was still sleeping.
She was curled up, looking pleased and serene, but with the light purple imprints of Loki's fingertips pressed into her bare throat.
Loki felt like someone had just let the bottom out of his stomach as the memory of the other half of last night's events came rushing back.
He had hurt her. Obviously her asking him to had been a test, to see if he were trustworthy- and he wasn't, he'd proved that now, she needed to be certain he wouldn't let the Met go to his head and it already had and she would leave and he would never want to speak to him again and she would loathe him for what he did to her , what did she expect, she knew what he'd done to Sif, she knew he ruined everything he ever touched-
"I'm sorry- please, please, I'm sorry-"
He smoothed her hair back from her sleeping face, voice trembling.
"Please... please..."
