In the shadow of a really ugly piece of statuary, Alex was busy sucking truffle oil off an onyx-and-gold cufflink. Menswear jewelry left a lot to be desired; he managed to do this while visually tracking an immense, swaying pillar of white and gold mosey through the crowd. Herbert was appealingly distinctive in motion and hopefully even with those eyes he'd be able to spot him if he stood very still. Or if Alex willed it into being by wishing really hard.

Herbert was not very moseyful by the time he approached him. Quite the opposite, in fact.

"How are you holding up?"
In lieu of or to supplement a mask, Alex had drawn a thick red line of makeup across his face at eye-level. It cast everything he looked at in a weird light, and Herbert up close was no different.

"Oh, darling, when am I ever not perfectly well?" he said, with a brittle little laugh.

"Come here, λέον ἐμοῦ, look at these canapés. They're very interesting."
Two of them were balanced on a tiny plate, still bleeding truffle oil, and he gestured as if to hold them up to scrutiny. After a moment, he wrinkled his nose. "That's not right, actually, I don't think. Get over here, big guy."

"I'm so much more bored than I ever expected to be," Herbert groaned. "I thought this would be fun..."

"How do you feel about people-watching? All these people are humongous assholes, though."

"Do you suppose any of them could be convinced to hand over their valuables?"

"Pretty easily, probably. You'd be a great highwayman."

"This is dull," he groaned.

"Dad's talking with the illustrious Lord Ashton?" Alex crept up and leaned against Herbert companionably. "Whatever, gross. We could probably score something if we loitered around the men's room enough."
Alex didn't know the first thing about buying anything illicit (instead of just reaping the benefits of other people's sloppy gestures of friendship) and certainly not anything about not getting ripped off.

"ACTUALLY," said Herbert, "he's with Teja."
He winked.

"Ohoho. Good for her, I guess."
Alex winked, badly.
