"I'm doing well also," she supplied, not that anyone had asked. "Did you see Loki's clothes? That's how they dress in Asgard."

Krolock glanced up in his direction and smiled.
"Ah, yes. Rather less Wagnerian than one might have supposed, isn't it?"

"That's because he's from space, Vati," Herbert volunteered.

"Herbert, why don't you go find Alex, hmm?" Krolock suggested, in a subtly firm tone of voice. Herbert turned away and pulled his mask over his face as he disappeared into the crowd, as much as 6'6" of long-haired vampire could in fact disappear.
When Krolock looked back at Teja again, his smile was a little strained.
"These big parties... he is a gentle, sensitive youth, and the noise and crowds do very little in his favor."

Gentle and sensitive were not at all qualities she thought Herbert possessed, but he had at least tried to be kind to her in the past - the nastiness he showed Loki was sort of Loki's own fault. She smiled politely.
"To be honest I love his extravagant space clothes. As you can imagine, he doesn't get to wear them often."

"I'm sure he appreciates the occasion, then, " Krolock said. "Have you any idea whom that little creature he is speaking to might be?"

"Not really," she said, sounding as unconcerned as she felt.

"Ah," said Krolock, with a small spreading of his hands. "I do hope you'll forgive my son's eagerness, my dear. He gets these... fixed ideas, one might say, in the face of all logic-"

It was distasteful to her to laugh it off with him, as one of his son's follies. She was suddenly reminded of boys from college so eager to laugh off their pursuit of her in the name of staying "friends". Maybe he had mentioned something to his son. She pushed the idea from her mind, but something of its unpleasance still showed on her face; she looked as though she had had a memory she disliked enter her mind all of a sudden.

He frowned.
"My dear, have I caused you some offense?"

"No, it's nothing."

"It was Herbert, was it not? It is as I said- he gets these... small obsessions, a desire to arrange things. I realize his intent now," he said, "and I must apologize for the interference. I should hate to come between you and your betrothed..."
He nodded toward Loki, and gave Teja a faintly sad look.

She frowned so slightly she didn't realize she had done so.
"It's fine. Herbert's intentions alone couldn't come between Loki and I."

"I have no further need of lovers," he said. "I suppose he meant it kindly, but- I mean you no offense, I should hope I do not inflict it..."

"I think he wants to be as important in your life as you are to his. After all, he's reliant on you."
