"Oh, but that could be any number of things…"

"I mean you're smothering, again," she replied smoothly. "Can't I even bathe alone?"

"You just did," he reminded her teasingly.

"And you quickly complained about it."
She threaded her fingers through his hair, but in a slightly tugging, teasing way.

"I'm allowed to be disappointed by missing my own fiancée," he said, "even if it was my own departure that caused it, and you will simply have to cope with that fact."
He leaned back into her tugging hand, with a slightly wry look at her.

"Why is it we never set out to do something fun without derailing all of it by talking?"

He paused, looking pensive.
"You're right," he said. "Enough of all this."
He immediately set about enthusiastically making overtures toward something she had a particular fondness for.

It was a good end to a terrible day, but then again, so had yesterday been. Still, it was at least good to be reminded of how much she liked Loki. Sometimes - often, actually - it felt more like she loved someone she didn't necessarily want to be around. Enjoying spending any time with him was sort of a rarity now. She wouldn't admit it to anyone, except perhaps David - who was there to confide in? She supposed she had told Krolock as much - but it was difficult to feel such diverse feelings for someone.
Especially now as the gap between them seemed insurmountable. She would have to have more than damp enthusiasm for him if she wanted to try to survive some kind of awful long-distance thing (and she had no faith in Loki's idea of coming home to her at night while ruling Asgard during the day).

It was still hard not to openly marvel at how well Teja fit on his chest. He lightly ruffled her hair and kissed her forehead.
"I did miss you," he said gently. "I thought I'd bring back better tidings…"

"Why should things get easy on us now?"

This was more than just not easy, though. It was probably insurmountable, Loki realized, but he didn't want to admit that out loud and risk confirming it.
"...we'll find a way. Even if it's not forever, yes?"

She shut her eyes. "Loki, for god's sake, after yesterday I really don't want to think about this-"

He held his hands up in surrender.
"All right, all right..."
He tried to sit up a little, which meant dislodging her, but he tried to set her beside him to lessen the impact. Loki reached into the bedside table to pull out a pack of cloves and a lighter, which he used with the same frowning delicacy as he tended to express while trying to operate a straw, then offered Teja one.

She repeated a little more incredulously, "I brushed my teeth..."

"Slipped my mind," he said, with teeth still closed around the cigarette. He plucked it out of his mouth and realized, rather mournfully, that there were plenty of things he wouldn't have in Asgard even if Teja approved of his plan.
"So," he said, "how were things in my absence?"
