Adrian had only just begun to cross the veranda when he saw Nina bursting out of the other side, with a disconcertingly recognizable- he'd seen enough pictures of himself a quarter of a century before in which he didn't know he was being photographed, after all- look of resolve on her face.
"Nina-"
He waved her down.

Nina had exited the house in largely-yellow Veidt athletic gear (shorts and leotard) and started doing doleful leg stretches in the sandy soil before she heard her father call her name. She was somewhat shocked she hadn't seen him; she had not realized herself so deep in her thoughts.
She jogged over and silently embraced him.

"Did something happen-"

She pulled back.
"Nothing new."

"What flared up, then."

Her hands went to her hips and she glared up at Adrian with a particularly stubborn daughter-expression (which she would never have used on her real parents). "Technically, Megan Elness; although not literally. But I don't blame her for disliking me. You've given her so much reason to."

He smiled grimly.
"Well, you ought to have better luck with her over time; you, thankfully, are not me."

"I don't know how much I see myself as an individual," she said carefully, not intending to imply too much that she didn't see Adrian as one in the same way, although she did. "We're not like other people."

"And it's a good thing for other people that that's the case," Adrian sighed. He gestured for her to walk with him.

She gave an unhappy shrug and followed her father down toward the beach.

"She'll come around to you soon enough, I should think," Adrian commented. "You didn't scar her for life-"

"I'm not sure that's true," she said, unsure of how honest her father was being. "She associates me with you very heavily, and why shouldn't she?"
She chewed on her lip. It was abominably bright out, even so early. "And... she was friends with Micaela."

A shadow crossed over Adrian's face. It tended to when Micaela was mentioned.
He didn't break stride, but he did reach to put his arm around Nina, without looking at her.

"I'm all right. I don't need to be liked. She's not the only person on the island."

"I doubt it has much to do with you personally as it is," Adrian said. "If you want the truth, I don't know how much she truly cared for Micaela."
