Dan shrugged and clipped it back to his belt.
Leaning forward again he balled his fists together and settled his chin on them, it was a beautiful island.
He needed to talk to Megan, but it was too early to bother her. He doubted the rest of the house would appreciate what he anticipated to be a big blow out so early in the morning.

"Not to mention that whatever cardiac benefits this might have are somewhat negated by your determination to turn your knees to dust."

Dan looked down at his knees and viewed the double knee braces with contempt "I'm not determined they just can't keep up with me."

"It's not a personal comment, Dan. I've avoided jogging myself for the past fifteen years."

"I know" he looked up "but I don't necessarily jog for the health benefits."

"Well," Adrian sighed, exhaling a mouthful of smoke, "God knows I'm one to talk."
He raked his fingers back through his hair, then took another pull on his cigarette and tipped his head back, eyes shut.

Dan hated himself for looking, but how could he not?
No, no he didn't hate himself for looking, he hated himself for more serious things than taking in Adrian. Even his worst enemies couldn't deny that Adrian was attractive.
He was still angry, but found that it was wholly directed at himself.

Adrian stayed in that position for a long moment, then forced his shoulders back to stretch them.

Dan was staring now and intently.
Adrian's right, ridiculous is the only way to describe what I am.
He blinked and adjusted his jaw, before leaning his forehead back in to his hands.

Adrian absently tapped some ash from the end of his cigarette and looked out over the water with a sigh.

"It's a beautiful island" Dan almost whispered as he watched the waves further out. It wasn't bad surf, but Dan had no intention of pulling a board out in to the water. He'd surfed maybe three times, once on vacation and twice during a some ornithology conferences in California. He wasn't bad, but he doubted anyone else in the current party could surf and doing it alone was dangerous.

"It was going to be mined. I bought it out before that could happen."

Dan smiled "That was good, it'd be unfortunate to loose this place that way."

"It's a bit of a pilot program; I have a neglected South American holding that might do well under similar development."

"Of course" he ruffled his hair and groaned quietly as he straightened his back.
