Bruce looked between them, lingering on Megan in concern.

Nina caught that swift glance and laughed, perhaps a little sharply.
"Here I thought my life was a very exciting serial and instead it's a romantic comedy. We don't choose our genre, do we?"

"You know, when you put it that way, you-"
Megan clenched her jaw, closed her eyes, and counted to ten.
"...I'm sorry. Never mind about you and Dr. Connors, I shouldn't've..."
She exhaled, blinking blearily, and returned her attention to her food.
She was losing her grip, she could tell. She barely knew Nina and she was already running her mouth at her like she did at everybody.

Nina moved a few feet towards Megan before realizing Megan was going to soldier on through whatever stress-related episode she was having. This was one of the most emotionally difficult situations she'd been in during the entire mess, and though she bore Megan no ill will, it was sapping her energy navigating it. She supposed it would be hard for anyone, but in paranoia she attributed it to a latent inhumanity always beneath the surface of her thoughts.
"It's all right, it's...."
She looked a little furtive. Keeping it on this topic was a bit of a sacrifice of her privacy and her dignity, but she hoped it could lighten the mood.
"It's complicated, but you're not- I mean that you're not entirely off the mark-"

"I'll shut up about it, don't worry-"

"Well, good, because I don't know when he's going to be down, he was still sleeping when I left-"
She realized what she'd said, which had not been disclosed to Banner, mouthed silent words and went completely quiet, drinking her coffee quickly.

"I... I can go eat in my room," Megan said slowly. "I didn't realize how poorly I do with normals at this point until now-"

Nina looked at Bruce and realized he was looking at her at the same time. They both looked at Megan with gentle expressions.
"We're not really normals," said Bruce kindly, while Nina sipped coffee. She wondered how much he personally knew about her.
"You should stay," said Nina, in a soft voice. She looked back at Megan, trying to communicate how she felt as best as she could. "Any company is better than feeling like I drove you off, and really, I'm not upset at you."

"Okay, but like, aside from... that," Megan said as carefully as she could to Dr. Banner, "you're just kind of like- I mean, that's not you, not really, and it's always me, and..."
She looked at Nina.
"You... don't even have anything like that. You're... I get that you've been through a lot, but... you don't seem like it. You don't give off the whole $5-a-viewing vibe. Not that you do either," she added quickly back at Banner, blushing mildly, "but you get me, right? You're" -she was looking at Nina again- "definitely a normal."
It sounded more bitter and contemptuous than she'd planned, but since there was no taking it back now that it was said, she just sort of stared at her to emphasize her point.

Nina looked quickly between Bruce and Megan, suddenly white-knuckling her coffee cup so hard she threatened to spill coffee everywhere. She put it down as steadily as she could.
"How much of a secret can you two keep?"

"Is this gonna get personal, because unless you have a lizard tongue or something I don't know how much fresh hell I can take right now."

"Nevermind," said Nina quickly. She saw Bruce was about to say something, but he clearly changed his mind. Nina stood up slowly. "Actually, I think I better go - I wanted to go for a quick run down the beach before the day got too hot for it, and anyway I'd rather do it while Curt is still asleep."
It was a lie, but she didn't think it would sound like it, especially given who she was. She excused herself before either one of them could recall her.

"Nina, wait-"
She slumped forward onto crossed arms.
"Well, that went as well as expected. If you want to leave too, you can-"
