"Well, I could make the next meal," she offered, smiling. "Though it'll probably be German. I seem to be predictable in that arena."

"I doubt Adrian has enough meat and butter for that," said Megan. As it suddenly occurred to her that this might have been an offensive implication, she found herself convulsively smiling again. "But it's... kind of you to offer."

Nina laughed and looked mildly sheepish. "I should check for ingredients first. He doesn't generally eat what I make. Sometimes Dan does, or... well, actually mostly I cook at Curt's."
She flushed and went back to the meal Megan had made, abruptly trying to not talk about Curt. First thing in the morning, too. "It's nice to be eating the egg yolk for once."

"Curt's- oh, Dr. Connors, right?"
A look of realization passed over her face.
"Oh- I'm sorry, I didn't realize you guys were... you know."
She stopped herself from pushing one finger through the O of two others.

Nina's eyes widened.
"We're not, we're not-"
She was now very pink.

"I- oh. I'm sorry, that was dumb."

"Well - I was in his room last night, but it's not like that-"
Nina put her head in her hands and groaned.
"I don't even know what it's like."

Megan had been on the verge of asserting that she and Dan had once been pretty close without being... involved, but this caused her mouth to pop open involuntarily and then shut again.
"Oh. Well. I mean, I assumed- only because, well..."
She shifted uneasily.
"He's not working on the project Dr. Banner's on. So he must be a guest, is what I thought. I mean, not all science guys do the same... science."
This sounded so profoundly stupid that she clenched the counter and looked away again.
"Not that I'm trying to pry, sorry. Or- or judge. I mean, I don't grudge you- oh, hell-"

"It's all right, I don't mind-"
She tried to compose herself and dropped her voice, sipping orange juice while she thought of how to marshal her thoughts.
"I'd much rather talk to you about it than... well, anybody else on the island. You're..."
She smiled quaveringly at her, aware of how devastatingly stupid and presumptuous this was about to come out.
"The only girl I've met in my own age group in a very long time."

Megan smiled weakly at her.
"Sometimes I feel like I'm already a lot older than I should be."
She looked both less certain and more sympathetic when she added, "But I bet you do, too."

She looked curious, but not offended. "How much do you know about me?"

"Your brother," she said slowly. "Adrian talks to David- the... the robot... not me, but still, I've heard that there's- he's..."
She looked really apologetic.

"....oh, yes," said Nina, almost mechanically at first, her smile at first dull and then too bright. "Well, believe me, I'm- doing fine, honest. It was a year ago."

"It was a year ago, I'm fine now," she repeated stubbornly.
