"Then, my dear, would it not have been you running the show?"
He gave her a benevolent-looking sidelong glance.

She nodded.

"And is that something that gives you pause? If you don't mind my saying- I speak only in hypotheses."

"I mean, if I wanted to run for mayor, it would go a lot better running it behind him, don't get me wrong - I wouldn't want to be mayor myself," she explained. "But I came into Loki's plans rather late. I really don't have the experience or understanding for politics."
Or world-ruling. She'd made a lot of plans in that direction, but it was all hopeless, and the weight of the probable violence that would ensue was depressing.

He sighed, with a grim chuckle.
"Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown and all that?"

"Not like that. It's... " She sighed, trying to think of how to explain it. "Not some Shakespearean philosophical struggle. It was exhausting, and I didn't know what I was doing. I've wondered about going back to it when I know more. But that would be a long time from now. He's studying law right now, that would probably help."

"A god studying human laws. How quaint."
He unfurled his umbrella and held it over both of them, despite the clear sky overhead.

There was no easy segue into the truth of it, but she didn't think Graf von Krolock would resent or deplore her for telling him, and that was sort of nice, the idea that someone else might know it.
"Actually, the mayor thing was.... well, it wasn't really a problem. I think we could have stayed in the race."

"Could you? He's- pardon me, I understand that this must seem rather rich coming from me- but my dear, he's not of humanity. Not even of this world, yes? It seems a most foolhardy decision for someone with so little understanding of how this city conducts itself to try to insinuate himself into the realm of pure politics."

He spoke very eloquently and could speak very quickly, too, but once he did so, his accent became much more pronounced. She hadn't realize before now how bizarre she found Loki's and how much more comfortable she was with Krolock's (or Veidt's) - it was sort of quaint. Not that Loki's ridiculousness wasn't its own reward, but being able to place someone's origins was sort of delightful. She had never had any fondness for German accents, growing up with her Omi's querulous voice, but now she supposed she'd developed a fondness for them.
She exhaled and raked her fingers through her hair, certainly not sure of how to word this now.
"Well, you're not wrong. Though he was prepped for monarchy for a few centuries - he wasn't the heir, his brother is, which seems to have been a little bit of a problem" (understatement) "but he was going to be his advisor or something. He knows how it works. Wanting to study our laws seems to be a good step forward - I'm proud of him for it.
"But also, he didn't really want to be mayor of New York. He wanted to rule the whole world.
"And," she finished, with a sort of grimacing expression that showed how much bullshit this sounded like, "I did sort of know about this... and encourage it and, well, help."

Krolock laughed, an abrupt burst of fully-formed and unmistakable has, and then finished just as abruptly.
"You are a most intriguing young woman."

She grimaced less after his laughter, but she still burned slightly pink from embarrassment.
"No, not really. That's the crux of my problem. I'm a shopgirl with limited education or resources but I met Loki at a gala ball completely by chance, and got swept up in this big plot to take over the world, and now all the people I know are vampires and gods and androids."
She realized she had left somebody out, and did not realize the implications of adding, "And Adrian Veidt, but that's also by chance."

"But you do not seem to realize, all that in itself is fascinating, yes?"

"No, it just highlights how much I don't fit in."

"Perhaps, then, you are not so ordinary as you believe."
