"I don't know," Herbert said fearfully, inspecting the ends of his hair. "Hopefully it'll all pass soon enough."

"It won't," said Sarah with miserable and even vicious conviction. "He hasn't had a new girl in a long time, and that's not out of faithfulness to me - things have changed since you've been gone."
She left that ambiguous, so it sounded much worse than it truly was - it was one of Sarah's worst or best qualities, that without hyperbole she still managed to manipulate how things seemed in describing them.

Herbert blinked at her. The effect was quite a bit less vapid than usual with the help of glasses, thankfully, and registered more as a habit.
"...I didn't know," he said finally, in a small guilt-wracked voice.

Oh, damn Herbert for making her feel bad for a simple misunderstanding. She dialed it back.
"Yes, we're sort of roommates- schloss-mates? I certainly don't mind, we leave each other well enough alone. Actually, Herbert, I was going to talk to you about this but you were having your fit."
She had now dropped her voice.

"You know I can't help it," Herbert muttered.

"Yes, I know, it isn't as though we don't have plenty of time to talk anyway," she said in a rush, guiding him by the elbow back toward the harpsicord so he would sit down and she could address him without looking up.
She leaned on the back of it and said, voice still lowered enough that someone passing through the hall would not overhear her.
"I've been making my own investments, learning the stock market and that sort of thing. It's not your father's money, don't worry about that. But the point is... the point is I might have enough to leave."

Herbert's face went through a rapid series of very different expressions- open-mouthed glee at being allowed in on this secret, surprise that Sarah would even think this through this far, and then back to anxious.
"I- oh. Oh."

"I had no idea things in this country were so atrocious, though."
Her nose looked wrinkled.

"I hope you have a lot," Herbert said, with a sad half-smile. "You're a pretty girl. It would be even worse for you."

"I'm not walking out until I have a plan," she said rather brusquely, arms recrossing. "I haven't survived 70 years in the shithole I was born in to starve in New York." She paused, and then said, "No wonder your father chose damnation for the two of you. It was the only way he could give Rome a proper thanks for that castle. What a splendid location."

"That was a good joke, Herbert," she said, feeling slightly tested.

Herbert looked away from her like an ashamed child.
"...you'd write, wouldn't you? Or you could send me text messages?"

"I wouldn't have told you if you were going to immediately break into separation anxiety - now, you'd better not tell him, all right? When I want him to know he'll know. Right now he doesn't even know I know anything about business."

"I won't," Herbert said, with a very sincere nod.
He smiled lopsidedly again.
"I wish I could handle myself the way you can, dear."
