Krolock withdrew his hand very suddenly, as though shocked.

Herbert glanced up at him and frowned.
"And even if I could, you know I don't know how -"

"Please excuse me, my dear boy," Krolock said, standing abruptly and leaving the room in a rush. He pushed by Sarah in the hallway without acknowledging her and quickly descended the stairs back to the foyer.

Sarah shrugged, looking even more perplexed and a little shaken up.
"I thought it was that Ashton god creature foiling his interests, but now I don't know. I've never seen him stop coddling you before."

"Herbert, when don't you? But not to him."
She folded her arms a little snugly, starting to lose warmth standing around in the dark air-conditioned hallway.

"My mother?" she asked incredulously.
Something from over their seventy years clicked in her mind. Her eyes widened, and suddenly she swore under her breath in Yiddish.

Herbert had to stop himself from aggressively humming. He'd already pulled his hair over one shoulder and was anxiously twirling it over his hand.

Sarah was tugging at her own hair with two hands and groaning.
"He practically told me - he said he'd just seen Ashton's fiancee, but he left it off at that and talked about Ashton."
