"I didn't expect to have one," she said with equal reserve. There was a long pause. "You'll be a part of it, won't you? Genetics, or - no genetics?"

"Yes. That's what I hope for, at any rate."

Nina was of course playing things very cool, but she had no idea how tenderly she gazed back at him.

It was at that impeccably opportune moment that Adrian Veidt walked in, having already gained that uncanny parent-sense that makes ruining tender moments a subconscious biological imperative.
Were he a bit less tired, he probably would have walked in, seen them, and walked back out again without breaking stride, but the universe had aligned in such a way that meant that for once, instead of fairly debilitating insomnia, he felt as though closing his eyes would mean not moving for three days. So he wound up paused in the doorway, looking them over, and then rather mechanically approaching the counter without sparing any energy for his face to reflect the smug approval he was nevertheless feeling building in his chest.

Nina startled visibly when her father walked in, and turned her back to finish preparing the coffee and set it on the table for Curt, then busying herself fixing her own, as she did not take hers black. The fact that she was alone in the room with Curt Connors? Oh, that didn't mean anything. That was most certainly not so they could talk in innuendo and hint about what good friends they wanted to be and how much she wished he had taken her to bed last night.
"Morning, dad," she said, stirring her sugar into her coffee as lightheartedly as could be.

"Good morning, Nina," said Adrian. He momentarily considered giving Curt a meaningful "good morning" as well, but enough damage had probably already been done just by his interruption, and he decided against it, becoming very fixed on his coffee instead. "The weather report is promising."

'Oh, you mean for flying in?" she asked agreeably.
Small talk, this was doable. Yes, Adrian, please continue not to call attention to Curt, he wilts under it.
(Unless it is from me, but no, this was an extremely uncomfortable time to think of last night.)

"I'll probably sleep through it," said Adrian. "Meg's still asleep, by the way. She won't be leaving until later this morning, after we've gone."

"On her own?"

"I'm leaving her money to call a car service," he said, spreading his hands a little helplessly. "It's the most I could get her to do. As frightened and alone as she is... frankly, I think she's enjoying the freedom."

Nina was able to smile genuinely at this.
"Yes, I get that impression myself. It sounds like she was a very well-adjusted girl before... well, Johan."

Curt glanced down, knowing pretty well what that meant.

"She and Gwen Stacy have been getting on famously, so there's that," Adrian added. He glanced back at Curt and added, with the most distressingly meeting-a-head-of-state smile he could manage in this state, "I hope you didn't labor Gwen down with too much extra work in your absence. Meg might request her company."

Curt smiled wanly. "I tried to arrange things so that Ms. Stacy could have a bit of a holiday herself. I certainly hope the two can spend some time together."
Thinking how young they both were, not so much younger than Nina and not all that much older than Billy either, gave him an awful pang.

"They are awfully good friends. Apparently Gwen came right here to tell Meg the day we - ah, well."
