"You have rejected my company," he said in a low tone of irritation.

Loki stared at him.
"You have no idea what it's like, do you?"

"What what is like?"

"Having to compete with you."
He said it very lucidly, very plainly, without any malice in his voice.

"Compete with me for what? Here on Midgard, what do I have that you do not have more of?"
Thor's voice was softer now, his forehead lightly creased in bafflement. This brought him down from his anger, but he could not make sense of it.

Loki glanced around for the inevitable proof in the form of feminine staring, but belatedly realized that this was the West Village and the only two women in the shop were holding hands and appeared to be looking deeply into one another's eyes at the moment. He'd have to try another tactic.
"It's less what I have proof of and more of that which I fear."

"Loki," he said warmly, leaning forward, hand across the table though not upon his brother's hand, "that which you fear is a whole nother realm from reality."

"I have learned to know better than to expect anything but the worst," Loki said wryly, with a slightly sad grin.

Thor frowned after a pause.

Loki took another overly-cautious sip of his frappuccino, with an identical frown to the first sip he'd taken.
"It would be easy for you to regain what you've lost. Luck gravitates toward you."

"What I've lost?"
The Thor of the past would have possibly broken the table, but the Thor of the past had not lost anything.
"You think Jane is replaceable? That you are?"

"I'm here. Jane Foster lies ahead of you-"

"Thirty years ahead!"
(His voice had rose, again. He did not consciously realize this but he did adjust his voice accordingly.)
"I thought I could reclaim all that I had before - Jane, you. Things between you and I will never be what they once were; it was a naive hope."

"Would you still have me hanging at your elbow as I did in childhood? Half a step behind?" Loki said, putting the cup down with a delicate deliberacy that functioned as well as thumping it down on the table would have.

"Is that how you think I thought of you? I would have you by my side again, and no less," said Thor kindly. It was painful hearing this from Loki, but he believed it could only do good.
