Loki averted his eyes guiltily but didn't say anything.

"But she is only a child. I-"
There was no taboo against weeping openly in Asgardian culture. A tear slid freely down Thor's cheek and he took no note of it.

"You're certain it was her?" Loki asked, frown deepening.

"Yes," he said heavily. "I would rather have not found her at all-"

"Better a child than a crone," Loki said. "You'll have a chance again in another twenty years."

"But I cannot speak to her now," he said in a low voice, not wanting a higher pitch to break into weeping. "I hoped... after the time I've spent waiting... I would be able to speak to her..."

"I'm sorry," he muttered, then adding "truly" in a blurt lest Thor not think he was sincere this time.

Thor stonily drank coffee in small sips, unused to most things but goblets and drinking horns and undesirous of spilling coffee and forcing some poor mortal waitress to clean up after his clumsiness.
"There is nothing for me in Midgard or in Asgard, Loki," he said in a low voice, which, if it were less Thorishly beautiful, would have been properly termed a croak. "I no longer know what to do."

Loki stopped himself at the last moment from muttering something about "join the club" and pulled off his overcoat, letting it hang at the back of his chair.
"You wait, I suppose."

"Wait I have. In Asgard, I waited, for news of you, believed dead, of her; for the Bifrost to be rebuilt, as father set me about his business and urged patience but withheld information or even fatherly understanding. And I am - tired of waiting!"
(He was louder than he realized; patrons glanced their way. He did not notice. He did not shy away from attention and it had become second-nature to him.)
"Where have you been, Loki?" he asked with a new fierceness added to his grief. "I must wait another thirty years before I can even speak to Jane, but I have found you. Yet it appears you never wanted to be found. Why all this distance? What have I done to deserve it? Even once I believed we had made up, still you avoid me. In fact you can only bear my presence when we are drunk on vile and I believe poisonous mortal spirits."

"You might recall it was a year on my end," Loki said in a much quieter tone. "And don't call me Loki around other people-"

"A year in which we thought you were dead, Lukas," said Thor in quiet, pulsing, fraternal hurt and anger.
