Thanks to it's construction being partially stone, Charenton wasn't as collapsed as it might've been from the fire that had gutted it. Still, even the stones were charred and some even seemed to have melted a bit. Looters had long ago combed through the ashes, and had disappointedly come up with little that hadn't been rendered useless.
Daniel didn't care about any of that. There was more to the building, there was always more to anything in this city than what your first look told you. In an oddly graceful manner, he slowly made his way through the burnt structure, managing to avoid getting any soot on himself.

The girl picked through the cleaner spots, climbing over charred timbers (now damp and rotting from the places where the lack of roof had let the rain in) and taking advantage from time to time of her preternatural speed, for the fun of it. Reluctantly she had relinquished her spoils and left the better part of them where they'd came in -- not something she felt quite comfortable with, little as she needed the stuff, and easy come, easy go. But the fur coat she took and wrapped around herself, hanging off her body like a dress or a particularly heavy cape. It was already streaked with soot.
Something crunched under her foot, what turned out to be a broken piece of a baby doll's face.

Finally, Daniel stopped in his wanderings and started shoving aside several bits of collapsed roof, eventually uncovering a trap door and hauling it open. All that there was below was inky blackness--darkness upon darkness. Thankfully, of course, Daniel and Jenks could see through it.
There were only stairs to be seen at the moment, but that could change.

Jenks sniffed, then made a face. This place really was all rotten.

"Mind the dead bodies." He said over his shoulder as he descended the stairs.
He didn't really know if the rumors about what was in the basement was true, but until proven otherwise he'd stick with the theory that patients had been kept down here to be fed through the machines in a secret torture chamber.

"Huh. Explains why it smells like shit down here. How long ago'd it burn down, Daniel?"
She trotted along placidly after him.

He walked along in thoughtful silence for a moment.
"Months? A year? I don't really keep track of time anymore, but it wasn't more than a year, I know that."
He stopped once they'd reached the basement and a horrid stench hit them like a foul wave. He actually made a gagging sound.
"The only downside to having advanced senses."

Jenks buried her face in her coat collar, cursing. The sudden burst of perfume, and the heavy oily smell of fur, did a little to help but not a lot.
"Christ, you sure know how to treat a lady."

"Well. I suppose I could say it's been some time since I took a girl anywhere."
He glanced about for a moment, and almost snorted in amusement at a sight nearby--an iron maiden.
"So, it was true!"

"What is that thing? A statue?"

"Torture device."
He pulled it open to reveal the spikes inside.
"Lovely little thing from the Dark Ages."

She waltzed over to stand beside it, touching its rough iron curiously.
"Somebody had too much time on their hands. That's no way to torture anybody, you've got to be clever about it."

"Well, there is a rack in here, too." He said, pointing.
"That one is fairly drawn-out."

"Who were they workin' over, anyway?"

"Probably the inmates," he said, eyeing the device thoughtfully.
"Captives that are here mainly because they're undesireable, and largely forgotten by the world. Easy to use them as guinea pigs when nobody cares."
