Kat's earliest memories of Manderley were of kneeling in the soil with her Nana, tending to the roses as Grandfather looked on. Grandfather was gone and Nana was growing too old to garden, so though they had groundskeepers for this sort of thing, Kat liked to spend at least a little time on Saturday mornings tending to her favorite bushes.
Thus she was in her plainest clothes, an apron around her waist and dirt very much under her nails as she went weeding.
((mud splotches are super attractive right (cue Henry c:) ))

He'd had a one-track mind for most of his stay here: Kat de Winter. Surprisingly, it wasn't the usual kind of one-track that tended to happen. He kept thinking of her in terms of how they got along--and, he thought, it was getting along more than just 'well'. His stay here was going to come to close, and soon enough he'd have to return to court. He didn't want to do that without taking her with him.
His stroll through the garden took him by where Kat was working, and paused to admire her diligence.
"Hello, Kat."

"Your Majesty," she greeted pleasantly, standing and brushing off her skirts. "I hope you've been having a pleasant morning."

She could make the simplest actions seem so--
Stop that.
"Wonderfully. Though such mornings, at least here, will have to come to an end soon I'm afraid."

The morning light was hitting him just right, and he looked every inch the King. Which was an awful, cliched thing to say and she was a little embarrassed at herself.
"You are leaving us soon, your Majesty?"

"Sadly, yes. I can't stay away from court indefinitely, I'm afraid."
He'd probably see her there from time to time, but that...wasn't enough. Not nearly.
