"Dan? Grow up. My new world requires a higher caliber of heroism than your little schoolboy games." "Remind me why you're convinced Veidt is a good man," Loki snapped.

Teja burst into tears.

"This isn't mischief," Loki continued, watching the shadows with crossed arms. "This is mayhem, from an old bastard who thinks he knows all, sees all-"
"How do you know what you've done won't simply cause more problems?" the man in the owl suit demanded of Veidt. "Oh yes, do tell," Loki drawled, shutting his eyes and making a little contemptuous "I'm-listening" gesture at the shadow of Veidt. "Because when faced with Dr. Manhattan-"
The air itself suddenly flashed blue and electric.

"You're a bastard," she muttered resentfully to him, even as the blue figure of Manhattan himself appeared.
"Speak of the devil," said Veidt. Jon looked completely inhuman; his eyes appeared to take nothing in, even as they swept the room.
For a moment, they seemed to pause and rest on Loki's figure before sweeping on and gazing at Adrian.
"Adrian."
The voice was even more of an echo in this manner.

"I'm not being a bastard, I'm being realistic," said Loki. "Everything made by the hand of man breaks, gives-"
He stopped when those blank eyes fell on his.

"You're being a complete and utter bastard-"

"...no," he said vaguely. "That's why there are... gods..."
His face betrayed his terror through and through.
"The Soviet Union and the United States were on the brink of a war that would have eliminated all life as we know it," said Jon. "Was that not why you came here tonight? To prevent that earth-shattering tragedy? It is prevented already. Are you not pleased? Already they are broadcasting their intentions for peace. They have not wanted peace in all these years. Now they are eager for it."
He looked about. "Does this make you happy?" "Teja-" Loki began, taking her hand.

She was staring, expression frozen.

"Teja, what is that-"

"What is....?" She trailed off.
In the past, Veidt turned on his set of televisions and the news broadcasts played. She'd seen those before.

"It's distorted like this-"
He'd seen this part, of course. He'd been there in person.
What Loki did not expect was Veidt's reaction, sickly-looking and terrified.
"You- this- it wasn't meant to be like this-"
I never wanted the throne! I only ever wanted to be your equal![/s]
"Stupid man," Loki muttered. "In far over his head-"

"I," Loki said slowly, looking at her, "am a god."

"This is only the beginning," Loki said, beginning to smile while the shadow-wraiths despaired in their disbelief. "It's all become plain now..."
He circled the shadow-Veidt.
"Veidt's, shall we say, fall from grace, is my redemption- the redemption of your whole sorry world.[/i] You and I- we can do what he only pitifully scrabbled for."
Loki gestured back at the group of frightened shadow-mortals and the cold figure of Manhattan.
"This is the last gasp of an old world that lived in fear, trembling before a manmade god that existed as a destroyer. I will be better. I will give them constant assurance of my love-"
