"I want to see all of them," he said, very seriously.

"You can't be serious - "
He was, actually. Completely serious. After she finished her latte he hurried her out of the Starbucks they were in and she had to dart on after him, still pulling her gloves on, as he head out purposely through the snow drifts, never seeming to get icy water on his pants legs or his shoes, and kept on walking, as she'd said, until they got to the next, where he bought three more drinks in the large sizes and, to her overwhelming astonishment, drank all of them within a very short period of time. Then he grinned at her and urged her up out of her chair so they could do it again.
And again.
Each became increasingly giddy, her because astonishment charles and him because of the caffeine; he was so bouncy and magical-seeming that, clutching his hand as she hurried alongside him from Starbucks to Starbucks, it was almost as though they were floating. He was an inquisitive little beast, too, not just about the layout of New York but seemingly everything; what were manholes, what were telephone booths (he made a prank call between Starbucks, while Teja smothered her laughter by burying her face against his coat sleeve), why hadn't he had coffee before? The mission - visit as many Starbucks as possible in order to try every drink on the menu - seemed ridiculous and farfetched, especially when she glanced at her phone's sent folder and reread her texts to Megan ("now we're at a third one and he is still ordering larges and he drinks them hot and he still has room" "We've been to eight Starbucks and he hasn't been to the bathroom yet but he's practically high and his eyes are like, sparkling!" "I said my ears were cold. He asked a woman on the street if he could buy her earmuffs for me. She gave them to him." "EVERYTHING IS COFFEE AND NOTHING HURTS!"). But believe it or not, it was actually happening, and though after the first hour her feet hurt and she felt numb all over from the cold after three, she was running from Starbucks to Starbucks with Lukas Ashton holding onto her hand and it felt like something from a Mary Poppins story.
Except he was her magical boyfriend - or, well, friend who was male - and instead of doing nanny-child bonding things they blurted to strangers that they had just gotten engaged for the flurry of congratulations that ensued, waltzed down an entire street, and at several points Lukas looked at her and said, completely out of it on coffee, "you are really very attractive, did you know that?"
(To Megan: "I will marry him.")
Finally Teja chased after him and gripped both his hands and said laughingly, "Lukas, I'm freezing and it's getting dark and I really need to have dinner-" at which point he gazed into the distance scrutinizingly, then grinned down at her and dragged her into Linens 'n' Things, promising, promising it was their last trip.
He came out with a panini press tucked under one arm, and her under his other, beaming up at him.
Then there was another journey to Lukas' place, spent with Teja drowsing against his arm and listening to him talk in an energetic, brilliant, thoughtful manner about all the things he'd seen that there were to bar, while she occasionally looked up and nodded like she was listening.
When they arrived Teja shyly allowed him to take her coat, bemused at her own ridiculous decision to dress in a cleavage-baring top when he hadn't seen her clothes since noon, and asked if she could touch up in his bathroom.
When she wandered back to the kitchen he had taken it out of the box and was inspecting it. She climbed onto a very tall stool and folded her hands in her lap.

"This promises to improve any sandwich," he announced as he started prying open the box.
He wasn't certain what a sandwich was, but he could hazard a guess from the box.

"Well, yes, that's how advertising works," she said, leaning on the countertop with an exhausted smile.

"You're adorable," she said in a sigh, almost not even directed at him.

He grinned at her.
"Is that all?"

"I don't often have company," he admitted. "Particularly not of the attractive female persuasion."
