Standing awkwardly in front of a swirling vortex, Steve took a look around.
He was having the weirdest day.
It had only been a week since he'd woken up from being in a coma for 70 years, in the year 2011... in New York. Nick Fury had just spoken to him about The Avenger initiative and he was ready to get back to doing what he did best, protecting America (and incidentally the world).
He'd been laying down to attempt to sleep when he felt his chest being tugged from behind him, then his head and arms, then finally his legs.
When he came to, he was standing here.

"Good evening Captain, I hope you remember who I am."

Steven turned with a jolt to the man in the wheel chair "I'm afraid I don't" he replied, almost defensively "and could you tell me what I'm doing here?"

Charles sighed "This is what I was afraid of, when the readouts showed your signature I was hoping that it would be you with your mind in tact. But-" he was quickly scanning Steve's mind, realizing very quickly that the Captain America that was pulled through the time vortex was barely that.
"My name is Charles Xavier, I run a school for gifted children. You're in an alternate version of late 1800's Paris France, not far from the time you were born. Most everyone you'll meet here is from different times or different dimensions and there seems to be no way of getting back. You're lucky however that you managed to be pulled through our portal here and not many of the ones we don't watch. And before you ask, no we didn't pull you here, these portals are naturally occurring and we've yet to find a way to stop or close them."

"With all the things that's happened to me in the last few years" he said, sounding slightly shocked "I can't help but believe you."

Charles smiled "Please, come with me."

Following Xavier, Steve tried to wrack his brain around the fact that he may never see home again... again. He'd just barely began to accept that he'd been in a coma for 70 years, and was in the future and now, now he was in the past.
Couldn't this portal have dropped him off at home?

As they moved through the halls it would become abundantly clear to Steve, just exactly what Charles had meant when he said gifted.

They moved quickly, faster than Steven imagined a man in a wheelchair could, although he had no time keeping up.
The pace however only allowed him to catch fleeting glimpses of Charles students. It didn't take long however before he noticed something odd "When you mean gifted...?"

"We're mutants Steven" Charles replied with a smile "Let me explain, mutation, is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward."
He turned his head and without speaking... Do you understand?

Stopping in his tracks, he blinked hard "Did you just-?"

'I did, I'm a telepath I can read minds and do with them what I wish. If I wanted you to think you were a child, you would, if I wanted you to kill someone without ever knowing you did it and without your consent, I could. But some of us choose to use our powers for good.'
"Not for evil, much like yourself."

"So my trust in you, could just be you, making me trust, you?"

"It could" he replied honestly "but I assure you that I in fact have no control over you or your mind and I can prove it in a few moments. Everything I'm going to tell you and have told you is entirely true."

He stared down the man, but could find no fault in him "All right."
