It had not been a good week in which to be Adrian Veidt.
Not that there really were good weeks in which to be Adrian Veidt anymore, despite the fact that he was rapidly gaining special popularity for the millions of dollars he personally had been pouring into the relief efforts after what was rapidly becoming known as the Manhattan Massacre. He'd gotten a very excited phone call from the studio producing the biopic, saying that this was now exactly the right time to start really working on the film, while he was more beloved than ever.
More beloved than ever.
God, what a sick joke.
He had arranged to return to New York in five days' time, bringing his new secretary with him more for security purposes than because he needed her. There was another purpose for returning hovering at the back of his mind, too, raised by his review of the script he'd been sent, but that would involve more personal negotiations with public officials.
He picked up the telephone and dialled a number provided to him by the studio. Adrian was quickly tiring of having to deal with Lazarus, but, well, if he was going to try to represent Adrian, he might as well be the first to know the changes Adrian was going to tell the studio to put in the script.

The phone was ringing.
God dammit.
When was a good time for an oatmeal bath these days? Reaching over he hit the speaker phone and sighed.
"Kirk Lazarus speaking" he answered, sounding a bit more like Adrian than usual.

"It's your alter ego," said Adrian, more teasingly than he felt.

"Mr. Veidt" his eyes widened as he sat up slowly "a pleasure to hear from you."

"I doubt it will end up being such, but no matter."

"I surely hope not, what can I do for you today?"

"I received the script today. I've been looking it over, and... well, this may seem counterintuitive, but I believe there's a great deal I'd like to see changed just so I can save face."

"Understandable, could you explain?"

Adrian sighed.
"Things of this film's nature always give rise to investigation as to their veracity by uninvolved third parties. I wish to preclude that."

"A completely justifiable action" he replied "I'm afraid to say that fans will always want to know more, and will stop at nothing to know it all. May I be so bold as to ask you what it is in your past that may come back to haunt you?"

There was a long pause before Adrian said, bluntly:
"That hard-working immigrants angle your screenwriter has chosen to take is, as they say, bullshit."
Another pause. Adrian took a deep breath.
"My father was a commander at a concentration camp, Mr. Lazarus."

Kirk was quiet for quite a while.
That changed things.
Although it explained a few things, Adrian's drive for success at any cost, his almost obsessive need to send out ungodly amounts of money to as many people oriented charities as possible, the trips finding himself.
He knew something felt thin.
Finally he spoke "That's, an interesting twist Mr. Veidt."

"I'm afraid that's impossible" he replied "I don't break character until the DVD commentary."

Adrian pinched the bridge of his nose.
"That's not necessary now, Mr. Lazarus, you're talking to me. You're acknowledging me... as me. Do you understand how little sense that makes?"
