Erik turned the helmet over in his hands again.
It had been a little while since Megan had left, leaving him with a strange prickling sensation at the back of his neck and a temper that could probably kill fluffy puppies at first contact.
When had he become so... old?
The helmet still had some shine to it, even after all those years... and the cape had seemingly also been spared by time's relentless march. In fact, his entire Magneto costume looked quite ready for use. Ready for another battle.
Too bad that it was just the costume.
Erik knew he was, as Logan would put it: 'Too old for this shit.'
Which was why, instead of donning his costume and running to the aid of a new cause, he was sitting on the edge of the bed. Just in his day to day suit. Turning the helmet in his hands over and over again.
Most of the costume had been easy to pack into the box next to him, even the large cloak hadn't given him too much trouble... yet the helmet... the helmet was a bit of a conundrum.
Because, he knew that if that helmet went into that box... and that box went into the attic... then Magneto would truly be dead. Killed by either Erik Magnus Lehnsherr... or quite possibly even Max Eisenhardt.
((Charles, m'dear? *readies poking stick*))

((I am so sorry, my internet has been off and on for weeks now )) Charles hadn't been as available to people as he would have liked to be, especially for Erik. It was something he regretted when work called, he became a slightly obsessive in finishing what he started. This week it was attempting to contact people through the portals. He'd been able to send people back, have people come in but never contact them and it was causing him quite the headache. But something told him that he should take a step back today, rest his mind. But as he knew, as they all knew, he couldn't do that. Rolling in to the doorway he smiled softly "Erik?"

((It happens))
Erik fought down the urge to jump. After all, he wasn't doing anything wrong.
"Ah, Charles..."
He smiled as he got up from the bed, placing the helmet back into the closet as he did so. Not because he intended to leave it there, of course... it was simply more convenient this way. Yes, that was the entire reason... it was convenient.
"I was just doing some spring cleaning."

"Ahh, of course" he moved in to the room slowly and came upon his desk "how are things? I know I've been quite busy lately and it isn't as if we'd had time to talk much."

"Oh, children falling from the skies and such aside life has been quite peaceful," Erik replied with a smile that was almost genuine, but hidden in the closet since something in there had caught his eye.
Peaceful, painful... the difference was mere syllables.
"Well, would you look at that..." he mumbled as he straigthened up, holding what looked suspiciously like one of the gray sweatsuits he'd been prone to wearing at the Mansion while training their first bunch of little misfits. It wasn't lycra and he'd worn it well, as he recalled, but stylish... no.
"Did you hang onto this, Charles?" Erik gave the other man a suspicious look. It could just be a coincidence, of course... but it would be just like Charles to do something so... sentimental.

"In fact I did" he replied with a small laugh "I thought maybe one day we'd use them again-" he stopped "-but circumstances being what they are, well, they're here out of my overly active sense of sentimentality."
He turned about "I can't help but wonder what prompted you to begin such a moumental task of cleaning out the closet."
He knew why, he didn't have to ask, nor did he have to read his lovers mind. Erik was feeling nostaligic, feeling old, feeling... just as he did most days.

So Charles... right back to the point, in a subtle kind of way. Still plenty of 'outs'...
But using them would be meaningless. Because this was Charles he was talking to. The only telepath who didn't need his powers to know exactly what Erik was thinking.
"This morning I was berated by a young girl," he began with a sigh, sitting back down on the bed.
"I was berated for not rushing to another cause, not being a general in another war... don't get me wrong, if anything came to harm you or the children -broad as that definition may be around here-, I'd fight until my last breath, but... well, I guess my submarine-raising days are over." Erik rubbed his face. It was unlike him to be so open, but at the same time he was talking to the only person he could be this open with.
"This place is like a new world, a new chance... and we need to want the same thing, because if we don't..." He shook his head, it was best not to go down that road. It could well be the road that led to him apologizing over and over again for something that happened decades ago and had been close to inevitable.
"What I'm trying to say is... peace finally became an option. I'm not giving that up." Even if it did go against parts of himself. In a big way.

He listened carefully, as he always did, taking in everything he could from Erik's confession. He knew who he was talking about, as he'd expected her to come that day, something large was coming in the way of a villain from another dimension. Something he knew, no matter how they tried to stay out of, would find a way to get them in.
Reaching out he grabbed Erik's hand "It seems as much as we'd like it to, our life, our old life, always has a way of finding us. No matter where it is we go, it's always there, like a terrible beacon calling for us." Squeezing he attempted to smile, but something seemed to be pulling the corners of his mouth down like weights.
"What we want has and always will be the same thing... safety and peace for our kind. And when it seems like that peace could be shattered, well-" closing his eyes a moment "-at our age, it's no longer an option to take up arms, as much as I'd like it to be."
"Just remember, it's no longer necessary for our direct involvement, we've got a younger generation to work hard for us old men."

"Of course we do... and here I was thinking you'd trained them out of the goodness of your heart. You just wanted a peaceful retirement," Erik tried to tease in an effort to lighten the mood.
Humor had never been his strong suit.
At least he wasn't the only one who longed for battle... even if Charles would probably put it in much more noble sounding ways. It was one of the downsides when superpowers were your business. Both of them were still powerful, but they were also old. It led to a kind of forced retirement because you'd endanger others by breaking your hip while trying to dodge a laserbeam.
With Erik's luck, he'd probably get surprise-struck by acute rheumatoid arthritis while trying to move a vehicle, crushing everyone inside in the process. Grisly as it would be in reality, the image in his mind was actually quite funny in a tragic sort of way.
He made an effort to broadcast it to Charles.

Charles tilted his head "Oh Erik, honestly" he chuckled and rubbed his face "that's just terrible."

"Yes... yes it is."
Erik sighed, he'd prefer not having to deal with such visions of his future. Then again, when had his thoughts of the future ever been anything other than grim? He simply wasn't the kind of man to put his trust in everything turning out okay in the end. Not when that scenario had always blown up in his face in the most gruesome way possible.
"But soon all I'll have to go by is an ancient reputation and vague threats, so I might as well get some practice in now."

Raising his eyebrows, Charles shook his head "Or you can simply enjoy retirement, or whatever this might be."
What a word that was, they could never truly retire, not when there was so much work left to be done.

That one actually drew a half-hearted chuckle out of Erik.
"Why Charles... however did you get the impression that making threats isn't my idea of enjoying myself?"
Lord knew that the once great Magneto now spent a lot of the time he wasn't tinkering with some contraption or other to make their life in this world a bit easier intimidating people half his age and occasionally magnetizing Logan's skeleton for the heck of it.

"You know me so well." Erik's voice held more than a hint of fondness and just a touch of amusement.
"Therefore you should also know that perhaps I am simply not cut out for a peaceful retirement. The body may protest, but the rest..." Erik sighed. "I guess it'll take a lot of adjusting to."
He didn't want to leave. They'd barely started a new life and he wasn't going to run out on it... again.
