"Is turkey alright? I've run out of ha-" A choking noise was emitted. "Time traveling?" Her voice had gotten almost comically high.

"Oh yes, or space." He had put his hands in his pockets and looked quite calm, though his eyes widened at seeing her choke and gasp, "Micaela--are you alright?"

"Are you a wizard? Have I walked into an episode of Star Trek?" More to herself, she continued, "well, it explains the appearing out of thin air thing, at least..."

"What? No-no-no Micaela, it's all science! Not magic, it works on a few basic principles--Though I'll admit" He gazed off into the distance and slight grin appeared, "I sometimes fancy myself a sort of wandering...space Gandalf."

"Space Gandalf." She gaped, and then hurriedly began to stir the saucepan in front of her for fear of burning the béchamel sauce. She continued as if everything were normal, if awkward, then turned back to him. "So the little blue box is a time machine."

"Yes! She's my TARDIS. Time and Relative Dimension in Space!" The Doctor leaned over and eyed the sauce, "That looks delicious, Louis XIV would've loved you, well, for your cooking alone--hopefully."

"Ugh, like three roast birds for lunch and that was only for him, not to mention ham and mutton and sauces and side dishes and about a billion servants to put it out there--I pity his kitchen staff." She whisked it a few more times and moved it to another burner. "I wrote a research paper on the culture of food in 18th-century France once."
She reached in to grab the bread, forgoing gloves as she'd popped them in right on the rack. She tossed them hand to hand then sort of flung them on the counter, waiting for them to cool before spooning sauce on them and beginning to place layers of cheese and turkey and a dollop of mustard. Gruyere cheese on top and she popped them into the oven on a cookie sheet then leaned on the counter, looking at him.
"So time travel. Doesn't telling me you're a time traveler break some kind of rule? Change the past, change the future and all that kind of thing."

"Rules! Rules! Rules" He waved his hands carelessly, "Now Micaela, if we listened to every petty little rule, there'd never be any fun in the world! Now would there?" He shrugged, "Time travel only becomes really dangerous if you try to change things, big things you know."

"... does everyone time travel in the future? Could I have talked to someone from the future and not known it? Ooh, what century are you from? Do we still live on Earth?"
Now this was getting kind of exciting. Every so often a little voice would remind her how ridiculous this sounded, and a bigger voice would yell at it to pipe down, this was fun.

"No, not everyone! I mean, there are--different people, various people, but not everyone, and it depends, you live on earth for--a while, a good long while, and I'm from--any century," He flung out his arms "Anytime, anyplace, the universe is my oyster, and I'm its pearl, well, no, I'm not its pearl, forget that," he murmured half to himself, "never-saying-that-again," raising his voice again he added, "I'm the weary traveler."
"Who is very grateful you invited him in for lunch," He continued nodding toward the refrigerator, "and have you got anything to drink? I'm parched."

"Oh! Um, I've got wine..." she went to the fridge and checked for the rest (wine was always around; she lived in France and anytime she had anyone over if she didn't have wine they'd laugh at how American she was). "Water, some diet soda, oh, there's some orange juice..." She turned back. "What can I get?"

"Wine...." A cloud flitted over his face, "No, bad..." He clapped his hands and pointed a finger at her."Soda! I'll have the soda, safe bet! D'you have the cherry flavor?"
Glancing around her apartment again he added "So, Micaela, you've been living here--what, a few months? Are you a student?"

"Spring semester abroad," she confirmed, getting a glass with ice. "I go to school back home in the US, but I've been out of the country all year. Paris since January, Huangzhou before that. I'm an anthropology major, with a Chinese minor and an eye towards going into medieval archaeology."

"Archaeology, " He winced for a minute, "Goodness, archaeologists can be very--forceful women, but--that's another story--for, another time!" He accepted the glass from her, "So d'you find yourself drawn to the Dark Ages, or do you have several favorites? It's really hard to pick and choose, there's London in 1835, New York in 1927, though it's probably best to avoid Rome in 476."
He took a sip of the soda, and smacked his lips slightly. "Good stuff soda, lots of fizz, I like fizz."

She'd poured herself a glass of white wine and sipped thoughtfully. "I don't think I really have a favorite. It's all wonderful and fascinating and it's so different all around, but I think I like the dark ages because people group this whole millennium together into one, and its not all the same, I mean there's so much change and so many places and different people and one thousand years of history, something had to go on other than church-building and witch-burning."
