Herbert wasn't even wearing the hat. Tybalt scowled and stomped into the kitchen to prepare a Spartan meal, alone, away from Herbert and his ridiculosities.
It was easy to forget that in the last two days their relationship had shifted, and to behave as though Herbert was just a ridiculous, annoying roommate and nothing more.

Herbert rolled over and brought the back of his wrist to his forehead, a gesture that would have been much more delicate and touching were he a particularly petite and feminine woman, or at least capable of moving like one.

Finished eating, Tybalt came out to join him in the living room.
"Oh, stop it, Herbert, you hardly look dainty doing that."

"I'm not trying to be dainty. I'm just not feeling my best anymore."

He sighed.
"Do you want me to reopen the cut on my arm-"

Herbert sat up.
"No, no, I'll quite exhaust you-"

"Well, you seemed exhausted enough that it seemed worth it to offer -"

"Draw the curtains, darling-"

He did so restlessly.

Herbert closed his eyes.
"That's better. Have you eaten?"

"Yes, I have."

Herbert reached into his jacket for a handkerchief and dabbed at nonexistent perspiration on his pale forehead.
"I think I'd like to bathe," he announced, sighing heavily. "All this excitement..."

"Fine," said Tybalt, just a little tersely.

"You may join me, if you'd like..."
