Ah, but she'd prepared and moved a rook of her own to protect the weak spot in the line. If the his moved, she'd take it.
"Candor, or is it flattery?"

"The charm is in the mystery, is it not?"
He picked up a pawn instead and moved it into an offensive position against her rook, effectively boxing her in.

A bishop that had been hiding across the board came in to save the day though.
"Ah, but to find out one has been praised insincerely is certainly more upsetting than never being praised at all."

The black bishop.
"And what would I have to gain by flattery that the truth couldn't attain?"
He picked his white knight for his next move.

"Well..."
He set down his knight in a strategic position, in line for the black bishop in case she were to try and move it.
"I can't think of anything."
Cesare caught her gaze and held it for a moment.
"True beauty, like intelligence and strength and cunning, needs no flattery in order to be exalted."

She pulled her hair to one side and considered the board. It took a moment, or seven, for her to see it, but the opening was there.
"Check."

What?
Cesare had to tear his eyes away from her neck to see the board. After triple checking everything, he realized she was correct. He could move his queen perhaps or even his other knight but it would only prolong the inevitable.
"It would seem..." he paused, hating the fact that he had to admit it. "that I have lost."
Always the sore loser, he huffed and slouched in his chair. He reluctantly used his index finger to tip over his king as the official sign of surrender.

So he didn't like to lose... interesting. She smiled, genuinely pleased with herself for winning. He'd lasted a lot longer than she'd expected.
"A good game is worth the lose, though. We could play again."

Cesare got up from his seat, still ticked at the fact that he lost. He wasn't acting ill-natured or petulant but the fun had definitely worn off.
"Perhaps another time," he said. "The travel and the ensuing excitement has made me tired."

She yawned and stretched languorously. The effect was sort of ruined when she shook her head fiercely, as if to shake away the grogginess.
"I think I'll head in, too."

"My room is in that direction. I can walk with you if you'd like," he offered in a gentlemanly manner.

He stood a little straighter and offered her his arm in a manner that wasn't flashy or overly courtly; it was simple and polite.
