Cesare was rather impressed but his face betrayed nothing. He simply obliged.
"As you wish," he said smoothly as he moved a pawn forward.

Kat made her move, easily able to talk and play. "Is France to your liking so far?"

He followed suit without missing a beat.
"It has proven satisfactory. Many lovely sights," he said truthfully but with a mischievous edge.

Cesare moved one of his pawns to take one her pawns.
"I'm sure it will. France seems to be full of surprises."

The side of her mouth quirked. He'd freed up a much better capture for her to make--right into her trap.

Cesare had genuinely not seen that coming. That was a mistake he rarely made, especially that early on in a game.
"I must be out of practice," he said with a laugh, although he really meant 'distracted'. "Well done."

Cesare's next move was to start a covert trap from the other side of the board.
"Tell me Miss de Winter: from whom did you inherit your audacity?"
He set his elbows lazily on the table and leaned in just a little.

She noted the trap, though, and leaned in as well.
"My mother," she said matter-of-factly.

Crafty too. Cesare couldn't help but think it all excruciatingly attractive.
"And your beauty?"

"Now you're the one being audacious." But her gaze held his and she kept the smirk as she captured yet another of his pieces.

He grinned as he sent a rook forward: her capture of his piece had freed up a perfect spot for it.
"You must forgive me. I am told one of my greatest vices is candor."
