Zevran smiled softly down at her, squeezing her hand back, "Why we even try anymore, I couldn't tell you. I would wager that the entirety of us could fight you when you had a fever and you would still be standing."

"I feel bad for Maya... scaring her off like this after two days. And this is the least of the crazy," she joked weakly.

Speaking of Maya, the mage had been beside herself with worry--unable to really do anything, having no experience with this sort of thing (or even healing--something that she resolved to fix, even if it was just learning what herbs were good as painkillers), she'd found herself at loose ends and no way of distracting herself from the cries of her new friend.
She'd come near to panic, but had managed to calm herself down after berating herself for letting her lose her head, even if only a little. Zevran seemed to have things well in hand, although Maya did feel guilty about being not much help. Still, she did what she could, guarding the camp in case anything chose that moment to cause trouble, tending to the fire and biting her lip as she distracted herself by trying to distract Finnbarr.

"I don't think she's so easy to frighten. She's been beside herself with worry," he smiled a bit fondly before gently removing himself from under Ailwen. He stood and stretched all his limbs (his legs had about fallen asleep) and moved to the tent entrance.
"I think I'll tell her you are awake," he grinned, "And Finnbarr too, once you're up to it."

Ailwen couldn't help but like the mage. She had not known her long, but her gut feeling was good. And that meant a lot.
"I'll be up soon, you know me."
Resting a few days was NOT in the plan, but certain things she knew her body couldn't endure without a recovery period.

No outside trouble had shown itself, and so she'd wandered back into camp when she heard voices--Zevran, and Ailwen.
"Hello?" She called out. "Ailwen?"

Ailwen celled softly, "Zevran's stopped fussing, you can come inside."

With a sigh of relief, she ducked inside, giving Ailwen a smile as she spotted her.
"I'm so glad you're all right."

Zevran smiled in amusement, "I do not fuss."
He walked to the remains of their fire and pet Finbarr on the head, where he said in a much lower voice, "I coddle."

Ailwen smiled.
"It doesn't get any less crazy, but you get used to it," she joked weakly. "Are you sure you want to come with me?"
She patted the spot near her. "It can't be easy, traveling with two people who've known each other so long. I... I didn't expect to run into Zevran here. By rights we should have had some time to ourselves--I wouldn't have asked you along if I didn't think you were worth the time. And then I go and... do this. I should have had you back to the Circle by now."
She was trying to get the feelings out and it was not working. Somehow she felt things and she tried to say them and they came out all in the wrong order, with the wrong words. She hoped Maya got the picture. The hero of Ferelden wasn't exactly charismatic in the flesh.
"Thank you, for your help. This has to be some letdown; Hero of Ferelden and all."

"It's all right. I've always wanted to go out, be on my own, even if for a little while. And...well, I..."
There was one desire she had that she'd never dared voice before, mostly because of how it would make her sound. Or label her.
"I don't really want to go back to the Tower. Ever." She said softly.
"I'd rather just travel with you and see the rest of the world."

Ailwen had seen this one coming.
"You would risk being labeled an apostate? I'm not low-profile, but I have a sort of... diplomatic immunity."
After that whole "Saving Ferelden" thing. And it was well-known that Ailwen had worked with a notorious apostate to save the world. Things were looking up in Ferelden for mages, and she regretted not being able to free them when her responsibility had been to her own people.

She let out the breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
"Oh...I know too-well. But, it's just..."
She side.
"There is no freedom, there, and I don't like being treated like a criminal when I haven't done anything wrong. How can I be punished for something I can't help?"

"I do have a habit of picking new friends up along the way," she said, almost smiling. "I know the advantages of having a mage or two around. You're welcome to stay, but you have to understand... I cannot guarantee your safety, from the Templars or otherwise."
Within Ferelden, they might have the protection of the King.
"I suppose I should tell you... the... miscarriage. The child. I had no idea. It is--was--the King's. I didn't want there to be an awkward secret hanging over this from the start. So now, at least, it's an awkward... thing you already know."
Just after the fresh pain of leaving him had dulled, this happened. Of course. It was just her luck. It clearly pained her to speak of him, but she would not hide it. She was not ashamed to have loved him, only to have believed it could last.

Ailwen nodded, her expression solemn.
"I understand. Maybe they'll come charging after me, and I wouldn't expect you to die for me if that happens--it's asking too much. Maybe they'll leave it alone...the lands are still recovering, after all, and they'd need every able-bodied man to help...what's one mage compared to all that?"
She shook her head, as though answering her own question, though her expression softened at Ailwen's confession.
"Oh...I'm sorry it had to end that way. I hope...I hope you're all right."
She didn't really know what else to say. Maya hadn't had anyone special in her life, not like that. She could only guess at how relationships were.
