"But you still did it, Adrian," he screamed into the phone, "you still did it and whether it was right or wrong that stain'll always be on you whatever you do!" His voice suddenly got a little longing again, though he did not fall back into the crying and misery. "I wish to God there was some other way, but I can't be with you like this -" and the phone clicked off.

"...Adrien?"
There was no answer.

Adrien picked up the phone again and held it to his chest as he sobbed, then hung it up and cried onto the pillow, flooded with memories both of the tragedy in New York and the conspiracy at Karnak, and his life with Adrian before any of that had happened. But he gulped down air as quickly as he could, trying to force himself to be composed. When he finally felt some degree of composed, he set the phone gently back on its hook, as though trying not to upset anyone, and ran downstairs to find Dan and launch himself suddenly into his arms, quivering.

Dan who was attempting to watch some television, keeping as far away from the news as possible, grunted in surprise as Adrien came charging in to the room at him.
Taking a second to let his heart calm down, he felt the boy shaking.
He'd been keeping a close eye on Adrien since they'd come back from Antarctica, and as it was expected, he wasn't taking the events well. His hand was healing, which made Dan happy, although oddly nostalgic for Rorschach, but his mind, was far from easy.
Luckily he was wearing his own clothes today.
Instead of moving him to his side he wrapped his arms around him, hoping he was only shivering from the lack of heat at the moment.
The heater was out, and the man couldn't be out until the next week.
Softly he spoke "Are you all right?"

"I just talked to Adrian -" he choked out, burying his face against Dan's chest.

It wasn't a name neither of them had evoked often in the last 5 days, so of course it sent a shock to Dan's stomach. The pain of Adrian's betrayal and Jon's decision still felt fresh, and Dan hated it.
"Did he- did he call?"

"No, I - " Shamed again, he mumbled, "I called him... I didn't know what I was doing! I can't stay with you forever and I - and I, I, I miss him, horribly -"

Dan took a deep breath and nodded, trying to understand exactly what possessed him to call Adrian.
But he knew love made people do strange things.
"Adrien, you know you are welcome to stay here as long as you want."

"But I.... I...."
He looked up at him balefully. "....I don't want to stay with her. She tried to kill him -"

Dan closed his eyes "I can't justify her actions, and honestly neither can she. I can tell you that she's regretting her decisions as much as the rest of us, I mean-" he closed his eyes "-I tried to.." he couldn't look at Adrien "I was so angry."

He touched his lips and peeped up at him with wide eyes. He was trying to express that what Dan did was different, but deep down it was just that even if it was on a perfectly arbitrary basis, he needed to be able to trust someone, and it had to be someone who had been at Karnak - he'd go mad otherwise.

"I'm sorry, I'm not helping" he sighed and looked down at him "I guess I'm not very good at this."
He honestly wasn't, he was more accustom to beating himself up for things, instead of trying to make other feel better about things that happened. But he was determined to find a way to help, he had to.

"It doesn't matter," he said softly, leaning back from Dan slightly, and then recuddling a little like a tense animal trying to rest though remaining alert.

Dan had to smile and although it was an odd situation, he felt comfortable holding Adrien in his lap.
He didn't know what to do really, other than hold him.
