Nicki had been there with his sister for two days already, a ball of nerves and panic. She knew what his plan was, and of course approved, and he had a feeling Nattie would say yes, but it was still a pretty terrifying prospect for a young man.
On the bright side, it gave him the chance to have man-talk with Chuck. They hadn't had many proper conversations before now, and it was good for getting his mind off things. Other than the occasional interruption from Evie, who plainly adored her father despite his late entrance into her life, they got some serious man-bonding done in the two days.
However, now the hour of Nattie's anticipated arrival was approaching, and he was freaking out.

Nattie tried sleeping, tried reading, tried studying, she even tried knitting which she was terrible at, but nothing seemed to keep her from getting terribly bored and feeling horribly nervous.
Currently she was attempting a pair of lopsided gloves as the carriage pulled up to the front of the estate.
Hastily throwing the gloves and needles in to her bag she straightened up her back and waited for the doorman.

Nicki was pacing the library as Adrienne sat quietly in the drawing room, reading. The butler--they kept a full, uniformed staff here--answered.
"Ah, Mademoiselle Petrova. We've been expecting you," he said politely, but not unkindly. Gossip spread and the whole staff had always been fond of Nicki, thus they were interested in his intended. "Please do follow me; the porter will get your things. Madame Bass is waiting in the drawing room."

"Thank you" she crossed her hands at her waist and took a deep breath as she entered the house.

Adrienne heard the carriage and the door, and, with only a little difficulty, rose when the butler brought Nadezhda in.
"Nadezhda," Adi hoped she'd said it right, "welcome! I hope the journey wasn't too horrible?"

"Nattie, please" she came in to the room still holding her hands at her waist "It was good, I have been on longer this is for sure."

Adrienne was moving forward with her arms outstretched as if to embrace Nattie, or at least take her hands.
"I suppose coning from Russia--"
There were the sounds of fine shoes taking stone steps two at a time. Adrienne smirked.
"As if on cue."

The door slammed open and a pink-faced Nicki grinned wildly, out of breath.
"Nattie!"

Nattie couldn't help but laugh as he came busting through the door "And you were expecting who, the Santa Claus?" She smiled mischievously and extended her hands for him.

"Not nearly bearded enough."
He reached out, took both hands, and kissed one. He would have hugged her if it were appropriate, but it wasn't. Especially not in front of his sister, that was weird.
His sister who appeared to have evaporated.
"Do you need to get settled in? The staff knows you're here; they've been instructed to get you whatever you need. Just ask. Um, we have tea. Not from a samovar though, from a kettle."

She waved a hand dismissively, all this fuss was a bit too much "I'm fine, I'm fine, if you have water that would be delightful."

Unconsciously, as he withdrew his hands, one went to his pocket, where in a black velvet box sat the ring he'd propose with. Not now, though. When the moment was right. Christmas eve, in three days' time.
"Water," he confirmed. Water he could do now. He went to the sideboard and poured a fine crystal tumbler full, turning. "Please, sit down. We could go to the library if you want, the fire's been lit for longer and it's more comfortable. I'm sure the carriage ride wasn't the warmest."

"The library sounds delightful, and yes the ride was quite cold, but I was having a blanket to keep me comfortable."

He offered an arm. The library was old and large, with multiple levels. Nicki was constantly adding to it, and it was obvious that it was a well-used room. The fire was roaring at one end, with a cluster of leather armchairs grouped around it. A rug gave the space a more personal feel, despite the room's long baroque layout.
"So what do you think of the house?" House hardly covered it, but if she were to say yes, they'd live here at least some of the time, and he wanted to know her opinion.

She was quiet a moment, thinking very seriously on the matter, he had yet to find out her love for architecture, it wasn't exactly something she exhibited to the world "I find it most inviting, not many estates can say such things. The style is very European this is for certain.
