Eyes widening, Ethan began to retreat, step by step. He found himself backed into a wall, and he commenced to wonder what sort of magic this was and whether it might be possible for him to learn it. His eyes studied the area around him for a possible mode of escape.
The boy made a dash for the gap closing quickly between the angel and one of the room's several garishly embellished walls.

"There's no reason to make this difficult, Ethan. I'm afraid your death is inevitable... you might as well face it with some dignity."

Ethan snorted and nonchalantly brushed away a nonexistent bit of dust from the shoulder of his white coat. "I laugh in the face of death, sir. I have escaped it once. Who's to say that I won't escape it again?"
He lunged to make a quick slip for the door of the room.

Castiel moved faster than a mere human eye could see, holding the blade in the direct path of Ethan's chest and heart as the boy lunged.
"That would be me."

The blade penetrated through the cloth of Ethan's coat, carving its way ruthlessly through flesh and bone to pierce his shuddering heart. The boy's eyes widened with the pain and the quick wave of numbness that overtook him, and he fell to his knees in disbelief.
He opened his mouth to speak but found that he could form no words.

Even though the boy was in no state to confess his sins, Castiel gently began his own version of the Last Rites.
It was disturbing that he'd had enough experience with this to do so.
The angel was no longer sure whether it actually did anything, whether his Father was there to hear it and forgive the poor mortal... but perhaps it didn't matter. He'd looked into many dying eyes and every single time the ritual seemed to provide a comfort for the soul he could not otherwise achieve.

He wouldn't go like this. Gritting his teeth in utter agony, he managed to wrench away the blade of the knife from his body, enduring deep lacerations to the palms of his hands as he did so. Blood surged from the gaping wound in his chest, staining his coat a dark red, almost burgundy, color. Panting with the effort, Ethan hit the floor and struggled to crawl towards the open door...he could see freedom...
Each movement of his body hit him in a torrent of unrecognizable pain, making him gasp greedily for breath. But the air in the room was diminishing, and there was only so much his lungs could hold. He was nothing less than a fish out of water, it seemed. Were there no more tricks up his sleeve?

"You'd do best not to fight it," Castiel murmured, watching the boy crawl with what seemed like a resigned kind of pity.
Did he like this? No. Was there anything to be done about it? No.
"Give in, you're only causing yourself unnecessary pain." He strode over to the door in a few steps and closed it before sinking to his knees so he could look Ethan in the eye.

"No," he wheezed, clutching his chest, the area of his body from which all sensation had first begun to ebb away. The pain...even the pain had subsided, until all that remained was a dull emptiness, and it was precisely this numbness that unnerved him, made it aware to the boy that he had commenced his journey to the afterlife. He turned over onto his back, one hand draped across the trunk of his body, the other grasping tightly to the carpet of the floor. If he held on tightly enough, perhaps, he could extend his time...
It was an idiotic hope, but Ethan was willing to anchor his hopes onto anything by now.

"Yes. It is time, my boy."
It was so sad to see him struggle like this... so futile.
"All you have to do is give in, all will become clear then," Castiel continued, his voice remarkably soothing for someone who'd just stabbed another person.
The angel moved so he could stroke Ethan's hair and look into his eyes.
"Rest now."

"I can't," he gurgled defiantly, his tongue rolling over the metallic taste that intruded into his mouth. The darkness had seemed to swoop in whilst he was unaware, and Ethan found himself losing consciousness quickly. Struggling to keep open his eyes, he spent his last seconds staring up at Castiel.
"The greatest trick of all..."
His eyes fluttered shut, and his gasps for air ceased altogether.

((Well, the scene's actually wrapping up--Ethan being dead and all--although I'm not quite sure where Castiel's player has gone off to. In any case, you can be involved in our later scenes! I'll PM you when we get around to them.))
