Zachaire waited until the echoes of his sister's departure faded away before turning to Treszka.
"So, Madamoiselle, perhaps you could explain how you can be such a mass of contradictions."

Treszka blinked at him. Well, he didn't waste any time, did he?
"How am I being contradicting?"

"Well," he said, softening a bit. He hadn't quite meant his question to sound so harsh.
"The fine clothes and appearing at the opera, yet living in a modest cottage and not having enough to travel widely."

"Maybe my family fell upon hard times, and I'm now living with fallen splendor."
She said, trying not to smile.

It was not, truth be told, the sort of answer he expected.
"I...would hope not." He said carefully, recalling the gaffe from dinner that he'd made.
"I'd hate to think of anything so unfortunate befalling you."

She waved it away.
"Don't worry about that. My life has been a simple one, and lived simply, until I learned at ten my ties to Rudolf. Before that, it was apartment living and then the cottage."

"So how is it that you gained Wittelsbach and then Hapsburg attention?" He asked curiously.

"I don't know," she answered smoothly.
"One day, Rudolf sought out my family on his own. I don't know how he learned of us."

Zachaire couldn't think why, but he had a feeling that she wasn't being entirely honest with him.
"Very interesting.
I wonder...what made you decide on the de Chagny grounds?"
He asked his question with a slight smile.

Treszka reddened.
"Er...well..."
She coughed.
"It...de Chagny was the first name I could think of."

His smile widened a bit, almost looking like a real smile.
"And that's all? Not even drawn by the whisper of scandal?"

Treszka laughed.
"Oh, no...it's just...de Chagny is a name that you always hear. I don't care for gossip, but it's hard to ignore it when you see 'de Chagny' appear in the paper every so often."

"What could they possibly be saying still? Violetta and I are upstanding citizens."

Treszka cringed a bit, thinking of the stories about not only Raoul but Philippe and the madness of Heloise.
"Well...your family is a well-known patron of the arts..."

"That we are. In fact, I believe that after all this time the opera is finally going to put a new show into production."
