*Julian's interested piqued slightly.*
"Useful? How so?"
*The thought that normal humans had some further purpose was rather...a progressive notion.*

The vague feeling that this...creature had a similar sort of aura to himself gave Destler the confidence of a sort of comradery. The man was as least as dark as he, and this small revelation--he imagined--would be well enough received.
"Tallow, for one."

To make flying potions?
*Julian couldn't resist the hint of a smile. This fellow was very creative at least. It was refreshing, especially for a human.*
"Where do you come from, sir, that you have learned such things? I had never considered that particular application."

((*snort* Dork!))
Destler laughed, jostling the scarf down his face a bit and revealing the cracked paint of his cheek, the sloppy stitching underneath.
"Oh, I was a candlemaker by trade, some time ago. Before I became serious about composing."

((Hell yeah, what of it? )) *Curiosity started to creep up into Julian. It was his mother's fault, but still unavoidable.* "You compose? Do I know your work?"

((It's precious! XD))
"I doubt it very much. I've had some minor compositions published, but that was before--well it's not important. I have only one work now, and it isn't complete."
He seemed to be settling comfortably into conversation with this fellow, and talk of music had his humor up.

*Julian's eyes sparkled in a child-like wonder, tempered with the understanding of a peer.*
"An opus? Can you speak of it?"

"Speak of it? How can one only speak of music? It must be heard to be understood!"
He narrowed his eyes a bit and peered dangerously at the other man.
"But it isn't finished, as I said."

*Julian looked a little disappointed.*
"Sir, I did not expect you to share its most intimate secrets. Those must be heard. And I would never ask you to explain them here on a catwalk."
*He gestured to the walk about them.*
"I have just found that when one is proud, one wants others admire their work. No matter how secretly, that adoration...provides a certain ecstasy."
*He glanced back down at the stage beneath them.*
"But perhaps it is not so with you."

It was true, to have one's work admired, revered, loved was...rapturous. But that rapture had been soured for him, thanks to his deal with the Devil.
"But when one is loved only for his music, he strives to...to..." He wasn't sure how to say what he'd meant. He had to hide his music away, at least for now, to find whether he could be appreciated for other talents as well.

*Julian sobered, his brow lowering.*
"Love is...complex at best."
*He thought of his mother and the whelp.*
"Sometimes it distracts one from their work, no matter how noble."

"I wouldn't know."
He growled a bit, reaching up to peel off a large section of dried, cracked paint, revealing the discolored, slightly slick-looking patch of flesh under it. "Damnit!"

*Julian watched him with interest.*
"Sir...if you are uncomfortable wearing that, we might retire to the cellars that you could remove it."
*His words were plain, as if the prospect of a man removing his face held no discomfort for him. For in truth, it didn't.*

Destler narrowed his eyes, slightly suspicious of the man's lack of what he thought was an appropriate response.
Cautiously, he agreed. "Very well. I know of a place, there, to retire in comfort." He turned, pulling the scarf over his face and heading across the flies, quickly, over and down.

*Julian followed quickly, his grace feline and yet unnatural as well as they descended.*
((I'll start a thread in the Cellars.))
