"There's a difference between being upset that they are reacting like that and feeling - moody - because of my age, and you're doing them both, and you should stop."

"I'm trying."

"...and now you're sulking. Are you sure I'm younger than you are?"

"Adrien, now is not the time."

Adrien sat up and looked down at him with a sigh.

Adrian looked back, slightly scolding.

Adrien mocked his expression teasingly, then flashed him a smile and lifted one of his hands to his face and kissed him on the knuckles.

"And don't think I didn't notice your stepfather's expression-"

"...yeah," admittedly Adrien, although not quite with enough recognition of how much this was bound to upset Adrian. "He's younger than you are and he thinks you want to be my dad, and so I suppose he's a little jealous - he says I didn't have to go marry a 50-year-old, I could have just come home. But, you know, he and maman haven't been together that long, and I don't know, I just... could never see Paul as a father."
The implication that he could see Adrian as one went, by him, unnoticed.

"I think he grossly misunderstands the nature of this relationship."

"I'm not trying to be your father, Adrien, and anyone who thinks so out to look in the mirror if they're looking for someone with a perverse impression of you."

"Don't say that!" said Adrien, a little agitated, slipping off of Adrian and standing, wrapping his robe more tightly around himself stubbornly, and tying it. The lighting was dim; it was still raining a bit, or had been until recently; water spatter was all over the windows. He looked over his shoulder at him apologetically. "I'm sorry, but he's not perverse. He's just looking out for me. Do you think I didn't defend you? He reminded me of Père André - he just assumed that he wanted to be like a parent to me, and thinks you do, too. He... doesn't really understand what else a man can feel for a younger man. He thinks it has to be that. And he brought up your age...."
He was even more apologetic about this. "You see? To him, that's only proof. He's just looking out for me, Adrian... afraid someone will hurt me..."

"I apologize," Adrian said, lifting a conciliatory hand.

He ran his fingers over it, human and inhuman parts alike.
"Can I put on a record?" he asked softly.
