L lurched forward from his seat, startled awake by the grating screams of some unknown individual, and hit his head on the corner of his desk. He clambered to the floor.
Strange, he didn't remember falling asleep.
"Watari--"
His eyes widened at the sight of the heavy-set elderly woman wedged in the doorway, who only screamed louder.

Not very far away, an entirely different young man just barely looked up at the sound of that. As long as it didn't directly concern him, it was probably just another annoyance.
Light was supposed to be here. Specifically, he was on a much-needed vacation--largely because of ennui. School wasn't back in session yet, not that he would have needed it if he had.
Out of idle curiosity, then, he turned and looked in the open doorway of the--ah, yes, the police department.

He slowly got to his feet, and rubbing his aching brow with one hand, he shoved the other deep into his pants pocket. He procured a small article, and held it out to the elderly woman.
"Please don't be frightened. Would you like some--"
She shrieked once and backhanded L, who stumbled several steps backwards. With a last cry, she squeezed her rotund figure from the doorway and stomped out of the station. In the meantime, L stooped over to daintily pick up the shattered remains of his lollipop from the ground.
"Looks fine to me," he shrugged, sticking the candy into his mouth.
Glancing quickly around him, his eyes locked with those of Light.

This kind of foolishness irritated Light. He frowned, watching the conflict break up. There was probably an interesting story here, but he wasn't interested.
Stepping aside for the woman to exit, he turned, considering moving on. Something made him look back, though he ignored the unhygienic "treat". Who would just pick something up off the ground like that?
Soon, he noticed a pair of baggy eyes happen to catch his own. Not that they seemed to be attached to anyone of great significance. Still, he gazed back.

L blinked once before removing his hand from his lollipop to wave, although his attention was momentarily drawn to the strange number of horses and carriages passing by behind Light's figure.
He was ten percent sure he wasn't in twenty-first century Japan anymore.
Thinking about it now, L was confident that the woman had been frightened away by his disheveled appearance more than anything. She'd most likely been expecting a smartly dressed officer or someone else of the sort.

The apparent temporal anomaly was something that Light had already determined. It didn't bother him as much as one would think.
Of course, this was an awkward situation. He didn't want to react to this person, but now that he'd noticed him Light could hardly walk away. He settled for a brief, rather impersonal nod.

It was odd, to say the least, encountering a Japanese student amidst the rush of ladies and gentlemen in Victorian garb. Perhaps, he hadn't been the only one to have been dislocated so abruptly.
With a last sidelong glance at Light, L shuffled his way back into the depths of the police station, wondering whether he might find Watari here as well.

Odd indeed. It was enough to make Light ponder about it. He settled for turning and walking away then, getting back to the vacation part (such as it was) of his vacation.
He'd remember the face, though.

L did pause mid-way back to his room to crane his head and observe the young man's retreating figure. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but something--perhaps, it was the set of the student's jaw or the hard expression in his eyes--didn't quite conform to his expectations of the average Japanese student.
It was something to keep in mind.
But, for now, he had more pressing matters. The detective scratched his head, wondering whether with this shift in time he had misplaced his stash of sweets as well as his handler.
