We appear in Adrian Veidt's bedroom in Paris, and Adrian is quite drunk. It is 1962 and he holds a glass but does not drink... I have never seen him drunk before. He is more vulnerable than ever in this way, and with his damaged hand and approaching age he was already vulnerable. I catch him before he stumbles and help to straighten him. I ask him if he liked the wine. My reflection is in his eyes, and his eyes are slightly unfocused...

"Very good vintage, very good..."
He steadied himself against the wall, and then looked around.
"...this is Paris."

"Yes. I can get your things."

"You brought me back to Paris..."

Jon held out his hand as though to show something in its palm to Adrian, and then in a flash of blue light and a wind his suitcases, his unpacked things, his papers, filled the room.

Adrian straightened up a little and looked around.
"This is going to be interesting to explain," he said darkly. "Thank you, Jon."

Jon quite literally gave a small shrug, although his face wore no expression whatsoever.

Adrian glanced around, as if making sure this really was Paris, and then turned back to him.
"I'll be going to Karnak on December 31 to oversee the results. Thank you, Jon."

It is January 1st, 1986. Adrian is paler than usual. He turns to the others, arm sweeping out expressively and hysterically -
I remind him that this is what he wanted. Is it encouraging that he feels horror at it now? I feel nothing at all.
"You are stumbling," Jon observes, moving towards him and offering his arm. "I will help you to the bed."

"Jon, honestly-"

"That is what happens," said Jon, who had less been offering than acting in accordance to what he knew happened.

"If you insist-"

Jon placed a hand on his shoulder, another on his waist, and guided him to the bed. There was no human stumbling, however, just an immense gravity and strength, a familiar electric feeling where he was touched. Adrian was practically willed across the room.

Adrian at least remembered to empty his pockets before he stretched out on the bed.

The things Adrian took out of his pockets moved to the nightstand of their own accord, almost slipping from his fingers.
"Before you sleep, Adrian," begins Jon.
