Her luminous eyes softened, and she clasped his hand firmly, stepping neatly into a turn. She thought of saying something trite and expected like because I love you but couldn't bring herself to do it. "Because I've been in your shoes," she said calmly. Then she smiled. "Metaphorically speaking." "I know what its like to feel awkward and cut off from the world." *It certainly seemed that way. At least for him. He pulled her back to him.* "But surely...it seems like the world would welcome you with open arms." *After all, she was beautiful and skilled with boobies to boot. Why would she have troubles fitting in with it?*

His eyes widened. "Good grief, I can't imagine how someone would think that a good idea! I was simply thinking that the theme could be Venetian, and everyone shows up in masks." "Yeah, I know some... interesting people." She wasn't sure what to talk about, really. She would feel stupid bringing up Opera again. "So many old families here tonight," she observed. "Anyone you know?"

*Eric strolled in quite casually, though he was dressed sharp as ever. Parisians did seem to enjoy there parties and he was perfectly content to enjoy its party goers. He smiled wolfishly over the assembled mass, as if trying to pick from a lavish menu. So many beauties, so little time.* From behind a tapestry depicting a fanciful forested scene-- complete with fey, a unicorn, and a tree with a Father Nature face--stepped the darkly beautiful and ethereally graceful Liath. If anyone had been paying attention, they likely would have done a double-take, as the tapestry lay flat against the wall and wasn't hiding any sort of room or niche behind itself. She immediately spotted the vampire. Well, really, she couldn't help spotting him--he was the only technical one in the crowd (the sparkly girl didn't count, in Liath's eyes), and on top of that he was quite fetching in appearance. With a small smile played across her lips, she effortlessly made her way over to him, the crowd seeming to part almost automatically. "Hello there, my good man." She purred. ((LOL for sparky!vampire fail.)) *Eric's brow arched perfectly, obviously interested but not appearing surprised by the sudden appearance.* "Greetings to you as well." *He turned to her with the slightest bow of his head as he took her in. Her beauty was ethereal, obviously not human, but he could not place it just yet.* "I hope you have been enjoying your evening." *The words slipped out in his characteristically sultry tongue.*

She stared at him, then shook her head slowly.
"When one is an assassin, one cannot afford to allow others in. We are cut off from the world by choice, but it does not mean I was happy about that choice. I chose it because I was ordered to, not because I desired it."
She smiled as he dipped her into a turn.
"You, of all, should know how that feels."

"Well yes," *He admitted, though it was hardly the same.*
"It's only...you chose to--well I suppose you didn't choose-- but...I don't know. Nevermind." *He shook his head and focused on the dance, trying to remind himself that just because he had never been part of the human world, didn't make her situation less painful.*

She caught both his hands and stopped dancing.
"Beloved, what is it?" she said gently.

*Oh, he'd gone and done it now. Even though she was trying to be sweet about it.*
"I just can't understand what it's like to be...them." *He whispered desperately to her, glancing at the other couples still moving around them.*
"I try and observe, but in the end, I don't know if I ever even get close."

So that was it.
She smiled up at him, looking beyond the skin he wore and into the eyes of what he was.
"Thantaos, you do not have to be anything but yourself, not with me."

*His brow lifted, instantly softening his expression. Maybe they were different, but she could at least sympathize with him. Maybe she didn't need...everything else. He felt that pull, the natural urge to be with her and he leaned to kiss her softly. He'd always been better with that than words any day.*

She slipped her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply. Her long red gown brushed against him, and she nestled against him.

*Mmm...now that was perfect. Nirvana. Bliss. The thought struck Death suddenly that perhaps there might be a better place for them right now than a crowded room. But if they went home there would be the kids and the dishes and more work piling up. So he was satisfied to be here. Though after the long kiss, he smiled and twirled her towards the edge of the mass of dancers. There they could steal at least a bit more privacy.*

"Nadir. Wait, I beg you. I ask only to speak with you. I have heard troubling rumors." His grey eyes dimmed in grief and fear. "Rumours?" Nadir's laugh was devoid of any real humour. "I doubt I can help. If it's not too much to ask, I just want to have a drink, by myself, mingle just enough to be appropriate and leave. My life is finally peaceful--or at least quiet. Don't try to involve me in your battles, Xandros."

She inclined her head in turn. It didn't hurt to be polite, and besides, this was a vampire, not some common mortal. One could show some courtesy to another immortal supernatural. "I have, so far, though I've only recently arrived. I fear I'd heard word of this a bit later than most. I hope I didn't miss too much?"

"Anyone you know?" "Well, I see de Winter, certainly, and...good lord...de Chagny?" He sounded genuinely shocked at seeing them--not because they had once been rivals of Desmarais (and Olivier didn't see them as such)--but because of the scandalous reputation that followed them.
