Except he didn't really have anyone to scold him when he was a teenager.
He said as he ran a list of names in his head.
"Kathleen?" he automatically assumed but stopped to think. The girl was still in Paris so it couldn't have been her. So he jumped to the only other possible option. "Olivier. You were with Olivier?"
Chuck's voice turned a bit softer as he mentioned his name. He had met Olivier on many occasions and had grown to like the boy: well-mannered, smart, kind and very handsome. What was there not to like.

She reflected for half a second before answering. She knew her father, and she knew the change in inflection. This could work fantastically to her advantage.
"I with Monsieur Desmarais, yes." It wasn't lying, exactly. "You needn't fear for my virtue; in fact I'm pretty sure he's a nun dressed up as a boy." The second part was the kind of tone that only teenagers can pull off: I'm-the-one-in-trouble-but-you're-an-incredible-inconvenience-so-just-go-away.

He couldn't help but smile at his daughter. He never could stay mad at her.
"That's exactly why I like him," he said with a grin as he walked over and took Evie by the shoulders.
"Come on. Get cleaned up and go to bed. We've got another one of those pointless garden parties tomorrow."

She gave him a quick hug, tucking her head under his chin before standing on tiptoe to kiss his cheek.
"Bonne nuit, Papa," she said sleepily, and went up the stairs.

Chuck watched her walk away and up the stairs.
"Bonne nuit, ma cherie," he said quietly.
With a deep sigh, he finished the brandy left in his glass and returned to his room. He tried to be as quiet as possible as he crawled back into bed.

Adrienne rolled over and made a noise somewhat like "nnnnggffllrrgmmm." Even after taking care of Evie and Vincent as babies, she slept like a log. "Where were you" she asked sleepily, not actually expecting a response, and then inched in his direction until she found him. She exhaled, a dreamy smile on her face, and promptly fell back asleep.

Chuck smiled and wrapped his arms around her. He felt her fall asleep again immediately.
"Just making sure our daughter isn't doing what we were doing at her age," he said jokingly even if she weren't listening.

He couldn't help but laugh, albeit softly.
"She's been out with Olivier. There's no need to worry about that," he said, taking a deep breath and closing his eyes.

But Adrienne was out like a light, next to him as she had been almost every night for the past thirteen years.
