*Hannibal fought back a subtle smile.*
"Indeed."
Cock-sure, aren't we?
*He sighed slightly.*
"So what is it that you are hoping to get out of me then, Mr. Holmes?"

*Holmes fixed him with his steely gaze.*
"The way to free Ms. Adler from Dracula's clutches," *he said simply.*

*Hannibal arched his brow slightly, but was otherwise completely still.*
"And you are certain that she wishes for such a thing? Truly wishes to be free of him?"

"Of course she does, man!" *Holmes almost spat.* "What woman would not?"

*Hannibal gaze Holmes a knowing look.*
"Then why not run? Surely she has the resources and friends like yourself in other cities around the world that would hide her. Even if he found her, would the reprieve alone not be worth the risk? And yet she stays here, in his domain, even after her husband is dead."

*Holmes refused to bow to the implications of Lecter's words.*
"When I knew her, Ms. Adler had few acquaintance. I don't doubt she has as many willing helpers here as anywhere. And Dracula... is very strong, with resources which range the world and far outnumber hers. Perhaps she wishes to make a stand."

"Perhaps."
*Hannibal looked unmoved.*
"If he is indeed such a superior foe, then to make a stand is folly. An educated man such as yourself must see the logic in flight. Perhaps she would benefit from you explaining such things too her. I'm afraid that her therapy was...rather ineffective."

*Holmes frowned.*
"I am not certain I put much stock in your trade," *he said.* "It seems to me that most of Ms. Adler's problems are external."

*Hannibal forced himself not to laugh.*
I wouldn't be too hasty with that assumption.
"Think what you will about me and my profession, but that hardly improves Ms. Adler's situation. If she stays in Paris, this Dracula will continue to plague her, even when he is not present. She is fixated on him even in his absence."

*Holmes frowned. There was some sense in what he said; in her fear, Irene did indeed think on Dracula far more than he thought healthy.*
"Yes. I should encourage her to be... elsewhere."

*Hannibal arched a brow.*
"You should. Perhaps you should take your leave now. She might take quite a while in convincing. Although...if you have a case file, I'd be happy to look it over. I could let you know if anything else comes back to me."
*The hint of a cruel smile curled in the corner of his mouth.*

*Holmes stood.*
"Yes."
*He feared for her safety, and he should not have left her alone so long. He looked at Lecter and tapped his head.*
"The case file, as you put it, is here. I appreciate your time, Sir. Thank you."

"It was a pleasure."
*Hannibal nodded.*
You should take better notes, sir. If something bad happened to you...poor Irene might be lost for good. That would be a tragedy, now wouldn't it?
*He offered the faintest smile.*

*Holmes nodded and departed, glad to be out of the man's sight.*
If only he'd had something. Damn it. I'm no closer to saving her than I was before, and I have been long away...

((She suggested running, remember? Holmes said it would be no use.))
