Darcy frowned slightly, his expression perhaps slightly forbidding but intended only for himself.
"I had no desire to curtail your activity, Miss Shirley. Perhaps I should not have spoken so. I was out of turn."

"No...no..." *she said softly.* "...you were right."

Not that he disagreed, but he was a little surprised.
"That's neither here nor there, Miss Shirley. If I have stood in the way of your productivity, I must hold myself accountable."

"Really, Mr. Darcy, I have only myself to blame for any of it. I'm not afraid of the responsibility for my actions..."

"Then it is easily remedied," he said, of the mind that all such problems were overcomable by individuals of strong enough will. Of whom, Anne Shirley surely was one.

"I think it will take time, Mr. Darcy...perhaps all I need is time."

*Anne smiled, hesitantly at first, but nodded. Marilla looked on with a raised eyebrow and Georgiana just beamed benignly at them all.*
...I wonder...and can it be a wise kind of match...? *thought Marilla.* So different...and yet not so different...

Darcy became aware of the extended silence with a start, berating himself internally for conducting such a personal conversation in front of family. He cleared his throat.
"Miss Cuthbert. How long do you plan on remaining in London?"

"Well, the doctor says my eyes will be fully healed within the next week or so--I can see better than ever now, but we're staying just in case there are any complications near the end. We've our passage booked on a ship leaving for Halifax...the Tuesday after next, I believe. Isn't that right, Anne?"
"Yes, Marilla."
"No doubt Anne misses Green Gables just as much as I do..."
"Of course," *said Anne rapidly.* "Not even London can compare."

Tuesday after next. And he would never see her again. But he could not press her to seek his company; and considering the necessary separation, he thought it perhaps imprudent to open himself up to further pain.
"I should think not," he said. "Though I trust you have been experiencing London to its best advantage? Have you been to all the sights, the theatre, the historical locales? Surely your interest has guided you."

"Oh, yes. I quite enjoyed the Tower and the museums...and though the parks and gardens are lovely, well--they seem rather too tame for my taste."

"Of course," Darcy said, smiling gently. "They cannot compare to true wilderness. Or even the charm of a country garden."

"I'm afraid I know not enough of country gardens to make any conjectures for myself."

"I believe my brother means the sort that aren't groomed quite so heavily as the parks in town," Georgiana said. "At Pemberley, the garden runs quite wild. Fitzwilliam does not like it too tame."
