"Does it...does it make you alive again? Give you breath, or a heartbeat? I mean, if it'll heal...this..." *she gestured to her neck, which was still seeping blood.* "Are there any side-effects?"

"It will heal, and you'll at least have a facsimile of breath, although I am afraid that- well, feel here," he replied, taking her hand and pressing it to the side of his throat.
There was no pulse.

"Oh..." *Faye's shoulders slumped a little.* "So...I won't be alive?"

"Well, no. You need a body to do that, and all this does is solidify the soul. You'll be able to eat and drink, but you won't really digest it. You'll look like you are breathing, but all that will really be occurring is air moving in and out. If you should happen to cut yourself, something red will come out, but it won't be blood. It will be only the idea of blood, if that makes any sense."

*Faye bit her lip and nodded.*
"...Like...everything is ectoplasm?"

"You could say that."

"You can't expect a miracle, Miss Lavoie."

"I...I didn't...I just thought...I mean, I hoped..."
*She sat in one of the auditorium seats with a sigh.*
"There's so much I never got a chance to do."

((Okay, so she sat down. I was totally going to include a whole "Miss Lavoie? Please release my jugular" bit."
And the elixir- and this version of Richard- actually come from a book I'm writing. So I'm not just trying to crush Faye's dreams.))
Richard sat next to her and just stared at the chandelier for a moment. "How old were you?" he asked.

((Jugular? She didn't grab him by the neck, though. And, yeah--I never expected the elixer to solve things, but Faye's ignorant and hopeful.))
"I'd just turned four and twenty," *she said sadly.*

((He put her hand to his throat so she could feel the lack of pulse, remember?))
He nodded. "I was a month and a half short of my thirty-third."

((Aw--sorry.))
*Faye curled up in the chair, resting her chin on her knees.*
"Do you ever get used to it?"

((It's okay. By the way- I just spent, like, three whole minutes trying to stifle my laughter over your "Safety Dance" parody thing.))
"It depends," he said with a shrug. "During the first few years, you never believe it. It's as though you see yourself, so clearly you're still there. I think I didn't really begin to understand it until what would have been my sixtieth birthday. Looking in the mirror, realizing that you haven't gotten any older and never will...
"I was lucky, in a morbid sort of way. My wife and son were already waiting for me."

*Faye nodded.*
"For a while, I looked for my parents. ...I couldn't find them. There's nothing for me, here--and I don't know why I'm still around, even. Was it because I was murdered? I don't care for justice...not for myself. What's done is done."
