*starts fretting wordlessly, then manages to sputter:*
"I meant a friend... or something."
*groans , sticks hands in hair, and looks down*

*Faye smacked her hand to her forehead with soundless frustration for a moment before the absurdity of the conversation overwhelmed her and she began to chuckle, a little.*
"I'm sorry," *she laughed.*

"I'm sorry, too. Honestly, I don't know how I got myself into this."

*Faye rested her chin on her hand and smiled hesitantly at Richard.*
"The offer of the...substance...was generous of you, but my point is, there's little I could do that would be of use if I were solid."

"I'm beginning to draw the same conclusion about myself, in all truthfulness," Richard replied, gesturing at himself. "I forgot how much more painful my condition is with a body."

*Faye frowned with concern.*
"What condition? Are you ill?"

*smiles at her politeness*
"Well, thank you for trying to flatter me, but you don't have to pretend not to notice."

((You're Stuart Townsend. Have you caught the Pretty Virus, or what? Is Richard the cripple-y one?))

((Yessum. And like I said, I only use Stuart Townsend as the model for Richard because there's a portrait of Richard painted in his lifetime that I swear to God looks like Stuart Townsend. But yes, Richard's body is slightly deformed. Not as badly as Shakespeare described, but there are some issues there.))

*Faye squinted at him where he sat. As he was sitting down, she had difficulty in seeing anything extremely wrong with his appearance.*
"Forgive me...I cannot see your meaning, sir."

Richard stood up again and straightened up to let her see. Contrary to what many strangers believed about him before they met him, he was not actually hunchbacked. If anything, the deviation in his spine made him stand more erect, though his right shoulder was a few inches higher than the left. His left arm was somewhat stiff, and the last two fingers had trouble flexing. Finally, there was the issue of his right knee, which inclined inward, and the fact that his left leg was a fraction of an inch shorter than the right.

*Faye blinked. His posture was a little off, true, but she saw little by way of a grotesque disfigurement. She was more curious than anything, and would have laid a hand on his left shoulder had she been able--as it was, her hand drifted through him.*
"Does it give you much pain?" *she asked gently, wanting to help in accordance with her hospitable nature.*

((The real-life Richard grew up with a whole herd of tall, beautiful blonde-haired, blue-eyed siblings, and there he was- short, dark and ill-put-together. The mental image I have of him isn't that unattractive, really, but I imagine that he probably would have considered himself rather ugly, just because he was the odd one out. From what I understand, he got in the habit of trying to compensate for it in sportsmanship and things like that. There's an apocryphal story that says he once broke an arm trying to do a running jump onto a horse, which is consistent with his nature, but the stiff arm was actually the result of a fairly serious battle injury when he was 18.))
"Just a general ache, really," he replied, sitting back down. "It's just... well... stronger when I'm like this. You know, solid."
He smiled a little as he added, "You know, my wife wanted me to bring a cane, of all things. A cane! As if to advertise it!"

((Awww!))
*Faye's chiding was almost maternal.*
"Well, if it will help you, I don't see why you oughtn't to use one. Stubbornness never served anyone well--and if it causes you pain..."
