So, apparently this was some kind of epic ice palace of sex or love or both or something. Huh.
Megan, being the only one not becoupled in one way or another, was exploring Karnak on her own. She nodded courteously to the members of Veidt's staff that she passed in the hallway, but they mostly ignored her.
She didn't blame them, really.

Adrien was a member of Veidt's staff, but a rather lonelier one. After half an hour of Bubastis ignoring him and his jigsaw puzzle he had decided to go out walking the halls. Not that that improved anything for him. It was terribly lonely there, too.
When he saw Megan - Megan, right? It was Megan? - also in the hallway, he waved in a cheery, and also vaguely lazy, fashion.

"I feel just like a pea in a huge box, rolling around by myself here," Megan admitted as she came closer. "I don't know how you do it."

"I roll with the punches," he said. It was probably as lame as anything, say, Dan might have said, but the difference was that he didn't know it was lame. "'Mused to it." He laughed.

"At least you get to hang about him all the time- it's Adrien, right? Same name as him, different pronunciation. Frenchier. Right?"

"Uhuh," he said, rocking back onto his heels and seeming proud, tossing his vaguely Veidt-like hair. "But there's not a lot of hanging. Ummm. He's kinda, you know. Well. Aloof's the word?"

"Well, yeah. I've noticed that."
She slid down the wall, onto the floor, her skirt spreading around her with a crinkling foof! noise.

Adrien took this as his cue to sit next to her, scooting her skirt aside with his foot first.
"It's not so bad," he said, sounding still cheery despite the emotions packed behind these words. "You get to leave before Micaela and I do."

"It must be like living in a museum or something."
She carefully pulled her knees up against her body- very slowly, so that she didn't expose anything untoward.
"I figure you can't stay for too long anyway. You'd get deadly awesomeness poisoning."

"I wish that meant that I felt awesome," said Adrien unhappily, "but it's more like feeling very aware of how awesome other people are."
Now he meant both of them, and unconsciously drew up his own knees, too.

"I knew Micaela back home. Sort of. I mean, I'd never met her in person, but I'd talked to her on the phone a lot. We were closer then, I guess."
She shrugged slightly, and tried hard to suppress the little break in her voice.
"I was always sort of in awe of her. I mean, people've been telling me I'm smart my whole life, but she's like... crazy-smart. Not crazy smart as in crazy, but as in 'damn, she's smart'."

"I dropped out of high school," said Adrien quickly. "I mean. She is like... " After the huge sigh, he managed, "They both are."

"Oh God, I'm sorry."
She bit her lip and looked at her hands for a moment.
"I learned a lot about things in high school. Not so much with the people. I mean, historical figures and stuff, yeah, but... I mean..."
She looked at him apologetically.
"I'm sorry to rant at you like this. I'm just, um, kind of... I suck at relating to people okay."

"It's okay," he said, feeling horribly bad that anyone felt bad about him dropping out of school.
"I'm... okay with it," he said, dimly thinking about what his part-time job had been before he'd met Adrian and sort of stopped having the time to do it. "Or... I used to be."

"I guess what I'm saying is that it's good for facts but not really for learning how to talk to people, or something."
She smiled, a little ironically.
"We must all look so dumb to him. I'm not used to feeling smarter or dumber than anyone, but around him, I just... whoa."
There was another small silence.
"I don't think he likes me very much, though," she said quietly. "I know I shouldn't care... but I do."
