At approximately 11 o'clock at night, the lock of the door to Dan's flat was expertly and silently broken, and an intruder, most likely an unwelcome one, crept in with hunched shoulders and incongruously unassuming posture and found its way to Dan's fridge.
The fridge did not need to have its lock broken.
Within twenty minutes, Rorschach was having half of a slightly damp egg salad sandwich while seated in Dan's kitchen, a chair brought over, as carefully as though he were not wanting to disturb anyone who was asleep, the idea of which was of course preposterous, so that he could sit in it.

Dan who had for once been out, without Megan, who was, god knows where, stopped in front of the door to his new flat and frowned. The door was busted open, and that could mean one of two things, either there was a very expertly skilled cat burgler inside or... Rorschach.
Moving slowly in, he headed toward the kitchen, and low and behold.
"Evening."

Rorschach lifted his head just slightly. He had known who it was immediately, of course. He knew Daniel's patterns of movement.
"Daniel," he acknowledged.

"You know, I might as well just give you a key, it would cost less than the multiple times I've had to fix my lock."
He shook his head and took off his jacket with a groan. "What are you up to tonight?"

"Could get better lock," said Rorschach after a moment, unhelpfully, and possibly dull to the point of sarcastic, although it was impossible to tell with his face.
"Tried to find who killed that girl," he answered after a moment. "Tried several bars. No luck. Helped myself," he said, and now was referring to the meal. "Knew you wouldn't mind."

"Of course, Megan might" he replied in an almost uncaring manner "well who was she? I mean, did the papers say?"

Rorschach filed away a detail and prioritized.
"No. Nothing in the papers," said Rorschach, now beginning to sound clearly disgusted, voice fraying like a wrung towel that had already had a tear in the fabric. "Papers can find room and ink to talk about perhaps unsavory nature of relationship between Veidt and eighteen-year-old ward, but not to talk about Geneco murder." He caught himself. "Found employment records," said Rorschach, sounding almost subdued. "Was Veidt Enterprises employee. Went by Scaramouche. Before that, no trace."

"Scaramouche?"
He wrinkled his brow and readjusted his glasses.
Scaramouche, Scaramouche can you do the fandango?
"And wait, what is that about Adrian and Micaela?"

If Rorschach had been a dog, his ears would have pricked upward. Micaela? Second female first name from him in one evening. Not like he needed any evidence about what what Dreiberg's existence had degenerated into, but he collected it mentally anyway.
"Unimportant," Rorschach growled, although since that was his usual speech pattern it was harmless. "Important part is Scaramouche murder. Was not a reposession; organs never once removed from corpse. Details of murder undeniably match details of reposession, however. Was possibly still repo man, but why would repo man murder unimportant Veidt employee?"

Dan closed his eyes for a moment "I don't know, jilted lover? Mistaken identity, it's happened before..."

Rorschach had considered the second theory; it was compelling, given Scaramouche's nonexistence prior to her employment by Veidt, and the fact that no organs had indeed been removed. But no one had even begun trying to tear out organs.
"Would think repo man would figure out she was wrong person before carving her open, or after tearing out organs," Rorschach deadpanned. "Explanation too simple. Execution too perfect."

Rorschach had never been one to leave out the details and usually Dan was fine wit that, but all talk about tearing out organs. Well it got Dan a little woozy so he sat down.
"Well were any organs even touched?" Dan finally said "Moved or-or anything?"
He had a feeling Rorschach had been to see the body.

"Not before I got there," came Rorschach's response. It was eloquent for him. But there was no need to list the organs that were there or how he knew that, so he didn't list them. "Wasn't a repossession."
Rorschach had an almost childlike way of insisting upon these things.

"Don't know."
He thought of asking Daniel what he had to drink, or just getting something, but neither action seemed appropriate. It was one thing to get up and get something without Dan being there, but another thing entirely to do it while he was in the room. Rude. Not very American, or partnerly.
And yet asking him felt pretty wrong, too.
