"Indeed."
He smiled politely.

Adrien didn't want to try and talk about it in front of Divine. His compass needle of the appropriate pointed north the same way that Adrian's moral compass did. He nodded.

"So I understand you're... friends."

"Divine's - " swallow of tea - "like a mother to me," said Adrien softly.
There was nothing in his tone to suggest he was lying, and across the room Divine did nothing at all to suggest she was surprised or uncomfortable or also playing a charade.

Adrian raised his eyebrows mildly and took a sip of tea.
"Indeed," he said again, as he set the cup aside.

Adrien looked as though he thought Adrian were going to call him out on this and half-wilted.

"How long was it you said you'd lived here, Adrien?"

"I lived here when I was sixteen," said Adrien, looking sideways at him, worried, "and then I lived somewhere else, and I moved back months ago... why?"

"Nothing, nothing at all. I was merely a bit... curious."

Again, a bit more softly, and a bit more anxiously, "...Why?"
He wasn't worried about Adrian questioning his relationship to Divine anymore; that had completely slipped his mind. Was he curious about where he'd been? Would he ask about Marchetti? Worse, what if he'd done some kind of research or something and already knew about Marchetti?
How was he supposed to confront Adrian if Adrian knew that before him he'd been in love with Roger Marchetti? It cheapened everything. Even looking back on it made Marchetti - and his feelings for him - seem unreal, impossible, in light of the life he was living now.

"Your... relationship with Divine, I mean to say- it postdates that which you had with your actual mother, I see."

A beat. "Yes," said Adrien anxiously.

"Ah. How fortunate for you to have found someplace to go."

He nodded, heart still hammering, though he started to feel relieved.
Yeah... pretty fortunate. He thought so. It sounded like Adrian did not really.
